Truman Pride seeks helpers

TRUMAN — Truman Pride is looking for some volunteers to help with a variety of projects at the public school, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Courtney Studer, a member of Truman Pride, said, “Usually this is the time of year that we’re able to spend the money that we work so hard to fund raise all year long. We have several different projects going right now.”

Truman Pride, which Studer says is similar to a PTA group, was formed in 2014. While the number who attend its monthly meetings fluctuates, Studer said there are about six people who consistently show up.

“Everything we do either goes to the school building or a school project or to the students in some way,” Studer explained.

Truman Pride funds the homework-helper program, and it has funded painting projects in the past. It also bought the new pads in the gym, and funds yearbook and curriculum projects.

“Since we started, we’ve estimated that we’ve funneled around $60,000 to $70,000 into the school. I feel like we do pretty well. It’s a lot of work but it’s worth it,” Studer said.

As for how they make their money, Studer said, “We do the concession stand at Rosburg Softball Diamond all summer long through Truman Days. That’s probably our biggest fundraiser. We’ve also done taco suppers and chili suppers, and clothing orders to try to raise money.”

As for projects the group is working on now, Studer said they want to start a Jaguar Pride Store, which will be a spot in the school where school spirit merchandise will be sold. There will be smaller items such as decorations, pompoms and face tattoos, as well as hats and clothing.

A location in the school has been found, but items still need to be priced and put together Monday.

“Community Ed bought a Cricut last year, so we need help putting a Jaguar logo on everything,” Studer said.

She said the biggest project they will be working on is remodeling the high school teachers lounge.

“We wanted to do something special for the teachers so we’re putting in new cabinets and painting. We bought new furniture that we need to assemble and things like that,” Studer said.

The group will open the school at 5:30 p.m. Monday and keep working as long as it needs to. Studer said people can come and go as they want. Pizza will be available for those who come to help.

“None of the things we have to work on are super-strenuous or huge projects. As long as we have a few pairs of extra hands, we should be able to get it all done within a couple of hours,” she said.
