Red Rock: Bring us your art

FAIRMONT — A community art show will be on display during August at Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont.

“We’re trying to do it as an annual show in August. August is actually our membership drive month,” said Sonja Fortune, director at Red Rock Center.

A community art show formerly took place every other year at Red Rock, but Fortune said they would like to do one every year moving forward. Last August, the show featured pieces from 30 local artists. This is the first time they have held the show in consecutive years.

Submissions are needed by Friday. The show will open Aug. 1. At this time, there are only about six people who have submitted work.

The type of art at the show varies greatly, and has included paintings, photography, pottery, craft projects, wood working and 3D art.

“Anything artistic that people have done, we’ll take,” said Fortune, noting that people can submit up to two pieces.

The show will include a people’s choice award, which will offer a cash prize. There also will be a photo contest.

“It has to be a 5-by-7 photograph that represents the area with no people in it,” Fortune explained.

The community art show is held in August because more people are coming into the building for a variety of events. An annual dinner, for example, will take place Aug. 5.

“That’s when we celebrate our members, volunteers, sponsors and all the people who make it possible,” Fortune said.

On Aug. 21, there will be a wine and chocolate tasting open house. It is free and open to the public.

As Fortune noted, August also is Red Rock Center’s membership drive month. By becoming a member of Red Rock Center, people are actually joining the Martin County Preservation Association, which supports Red Rock Center and the Chubb House.

Fortune said it is just $15 to become a member, and the money goes to fund the day-to-day operations and needed repairs. While Red Rock Center opened in 2005, the building itself is 121 years old.

In addition to helping preserve historic buildings, members receive a dollar off tickets purchased at the door for concert series events and 10 percent off art education classes offered by Red Rock Center.

Anyone interested in submitting work for the community art show, or submitting photos to the photo contest, may contact Fortune at Red Rock Center by calling (507) 235-9262, or by emailing redrockcenter@frontiernet.net
