Blue Earth Area to seek operating levy this fall

BLUE EARTH — The Blue Earth Area School Board unanimously approved a resolution Monday to put an operating levy on the ballot this November.

The amount of the proposed levy is $900 per pupil. The last operating levy, at $650 per pupil, expired in 2014.

The tax impact of the levy will fall on residential market value property (a house, garage and one acre) and not on other agricultural land or buildings.

Informational meetings will be held in the five communities that comprise the school district. They will be scheduled at a later date.

Monday’s meeting marked the first with new Superintendent Mandy Fletcher, who began her employment at Blue Earth Area on July 1.

It also was the first meeting for new board member Jeff Eckles, who was appointed to fill out the term of Jeremy Coxworth. Coxworth resigned from the board April 22.

In other business, the board:

o Accepted the resignation of Ryan McGuire from the maintenance department, effective Aug. 1.

o Approved a contract for Katie Kaluza. She will teach high school social studies.

o Approved a contract for Conan Shaffer as the K-7 assistant principal.
