Truck wash stirs concerns

SHERBURN — Sherburn City Council this week heard from home owners along Swanson Drive concerned about a planned truck wash on the northwest edge of the city.

The council approved initiating a process to annex 10.74 acres where the truck wash would be located.

The truck wash investors have received approvals to move forward from township and other officials.

The city believes the project represents an opportunity to generate tax and utility revenues. Council members agreed they do not have all the answers and that things have changed since the original proposal.

Officials say the city could accommodate the amount of water being requested, and explained how the water would possibly help to keep the sewer lines open in the Swanson Drive area. City employees are flushing the lines just about weekly because there have been backups.

The council thanked the home owners for their concerns, while the home owners thanked the council for its handling of the project so far. Both sides agreed to ask the investors to come to the next council meeting to answer questions.

In other business, the council:

o Approved the second reading of the ordinance for the Rural Service District, which helps lower taxes on farmland located in the city.

o Approved assistance to Jason Dorschner to demolish a dilapidated building, using city funds earmarked for this type of request as well as Economic Development Authority funds, not to exceed $5,000. Dorschner is asked to file the bills for the demolition with the city.

o Approved a quote for sealcoating not to exceed $40,000 and discussed the various streets needing sealcoating. They instructed the city administrator to pick the streets most in need and not to exceed the $40,000 amount.

o Denied a request from Tealwood Management for a break on its five-year contract to manage Temperance Lake Ridge’s finances and to sign a new contract for a straight percentage of the revenues. Council members noted that the amount would almost double under the proposed contract. The current contract was approved in Dec. 31, 2018, at $4,000 per month.

o Received compliments from the Lions Club and others about park maintenance for the festival weekend.

o Received an invitation to the July 23 celebration of improvements, such as street lights and planters, that the Civic and Commerce committee is planning. The mayor will attend.

o Learned the next meeting of the City Council will be 5 p.m. July 15 at City Hall.
