Woman allegedly assaulted officers

FAIRMONT — A Fairmont woman is facing multiple felony charges in Martin County.

Niki Michelle Stanley, 32, has been charged with two counts of assault of a peace officer in the fourth degree, each of which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $6,000 fine. She is also charged with two counts of assault of a correctional officer in the fourth degree, each of which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $4,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

On Feb. 14, Fairmont police officers responded to the third floor courtroom of the Martin County Courthouse in Fairmont on a report of an inmate who was out of control. Upon arrival, an officer could hear a female screaming and observed Stanley crying on the floor. A jailer indicated they were walking Stanley back to the jail when she began to bang her head against the wall and sat on the floor.

Officers lifted Stanley to her feet and began to walk her back toward the jail. While they were walking, Stanley banged her head against the wall again. Officers then carried Stanley the rest of the way to the jail.

Once they were near the jail, Stanley attempted to pull away from officers and ended up on the floor. Other officers and jail staff responded to the scene and assisted in moving Stanley to a cell.

Once in the cell, Stanley immediately began trying to hit her head on the floor. She also swung her arm at the officers and kicked. She continued to yell and try to pull away from officers. Stanley was told multiple times to stop resisting.

A restraint chair was brought to the cell. Officers assisted Stanley to the chair and attempted to place her in restraints. She continued to move her head and not cooperate. Stanley spit at the officers and a spit shield was then place on her.

On Feb. 15, jail staff were preparing Stanley to be transported to another facility. When staff entered Stanley’s cell to get her in restraints to transport her, she indicated she was not going anywhere until she could be interviewed about an assault she was reported to have suffered the previous day.

Other jail staff entered the cell and Stanley became uncooperative, placing her feet against the bunk and pushing herself against the wall. Jail staff placed their hands under her arms and assisted Stanley to her feet. She went limp and began to yell that she was in pain.

Four staff members were able to get Stanley out of her cell, but she then went limp again and refused to cooperate. Stanley began to throw her head back and kick her legs.

Stanley continued not to comply after she was placed in a transport vehicle. She forcefully kicked the squad window, yelled profanity and kicked a correctional officer in the right cheek. She then sat up and spat on the correctional officer, before she was removed from the vehicle.

Stanley continued to yell as she was escorted into a hallway and pulled on her cuffs. The correctional officer attempted to get a spit shield back on Stanley, at which point she bit a Martin County Sheriff’s deputy on the finger, causing a bruise.
