Mayo offers mall-walking perks
FAIRMONT — Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont has launched a new program, “Mayo Clinic Mile at Five Lakes Centre,” which encourages area residents to walk at the mall and earn perks.
Mayo Clinic Health System and Five Lakes Centre are issuing cards to track mall-walking miles. Those who walk 25 miles in one month can earn a free T-shirt. The climate-controlled environment makes exercise easier during the winter months. Distance markers help walkers track their progress.
Tracking cards are available at the wall-mounted card rack on the south end of the mall, as well as at Minuteman Press in the mall. Cards also can be picked up at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont administration, 800 Medical Center Drive, Fairmont.
“A regular exercise program such as walking burns calories, boosts energy and mood, promotes sleep and decreases a person’s risk of diabetes, stroke and heart attack,” says Dr. Timothy Sheneman, an internal medicine physician at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.
Mall-walking hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays; 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
