Courthouse dome work cost: $1.9M

FAIRMONT — Martin County commissioners on Tuesday heard from engineering consultant Bob Mickelson of ISG regarding a feasibility study of the Courthouse dome.

The dome has seen wear and tear over the years, and leaking has been an issue.

The report covered potential aspects such as replacing the copper dome, clock restoration, structural and electrical work, and even mural restoration for the artwork.

The estimated project cost is $1.9 million.

Commissioner Kathy Smith said the work would be a major project, likely requiring grant dollars to cover the full extent of repairs.

Commissioners took no action, choosing to receive and file the report at this time.

In other action, the board passed a resolution to establish a 2019 property tax levy of $16.3 million, a 2.94 percent increase from this year. The board also approved a resolution to establish a 2019 county budget of $27.3 million. This is down from $28.3 million in 2018.

In another matter, the board held a public hearing and adopted a social host ordinance. It would hold individuals responsible for hosting or knowingly providing a place for underage drinking to occur.

It states that it is unlawful for any person to host or allow an event or gathering where alcohol or alcoholic beverages are present when an underage person consumes any alcohol or alcoholic beverage. The ordinance also states it is unlawful for any person hosting such an event to fail to take reasonable steps to prevent consumption by the underage person.

There is a an exception that states the ordinance does not apply to conduct solely between an underage person and his or her parents while present in the parents’ household, and does not apply to legally protected religious services.
