FAIRMONT – Project 1590 will host a public meeting on the possible construction of a community center in Fairmont at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Fairmont Opera House.

On its Facebook site, the group says the gathering represents an opportunity to hear information about the proposed $25 million project. It says consultants will be on hand to answer questions.

Phase one of construction would include a field house, swimming pool, banquet hall and other features.

The city of Fairmont is weighing whether to commit $14 million to the project, with some of the funds coming from a half-cent local option sales tax and some coming from higher property taxes. Operations and maintenance costs have not been finalized.

It is anticipated that the $10 million remainder of the construction costs will come through private donations, although none have been announced.
