Homeless duo facing charges

FAIRMONT — A homeless man and woman from Fairmont are facing felony charges in Martin County.

Matthew James Redenius, 29, and Jenika Samantha Hanson, 23, have each been charged with theft, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In addition, Redenius has been charged with drug possession in the fifth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the complaint:

On Oct. 5, Fairmont police officers responded to a residence in Fairmont where they were met by a 46-year-old woman. She advised that Redenius and Hanson had just left her residence with a bunch of her property. She said they had stolen an expensive jacket of hers, all her money, a spare key and her EBT card. She said they were refusing to return her property.

The woman said the pair had been picked up by another person in a vehicle and she gave the license plate number.

The officers searched for the registered owner of the vehicle. One of the officers recognized the address of the owner as a place Hanson frequents, as the officer has had multiple contacts with her in the past at that residence.

The officers went to the residence and were met by another woman who said a male had driven Redenius and Hanson to an appointment. When asked if the pair had any property when they came to her residence, she said they carried in a significant amount. She said the property belonged to the male driver.

While officers spoke with the woman, the male driver pulled up in the suspect vehicle. Officers spoke with the man, who said the pair had contacted him that morning to ask for a ride and a place to stash their stuff. The man said a lot of the property was still inside his residence, and invited officers in to view the items. Officer seized the property.

The woman at the residence noted she had gone to Walmart with the pair Oct. 3. She said they had someone else’s EBT card that they used. The woman gave the first name of the card owner, matching the name of the woman who alleged her property had been stolen.

A search warrant was obtained for the seized property and several items were identified as belonging to the woman. The amount of the items had a value of $901.59.

An EBT statement was obtained that showed the card had been used three times for a total of $184.50 at three different locations in Fairmont.

An officer located Hanson and Redenius at the place of their appointment and advised them he was going to transport them to the Law Enforcement Center for drug testing, as they were on probation. While searching a backpack belonging to Redenius, the officer found a broken glass pipe, which later tested positive for meth residue.

During interviews at the Law Enforcement Center, the pair were read their rights and agreed to answer questions. Redenius admitted to being in possession of some of the woman’s items. Hanson denied knowledge of being in possession of any of the woman’s property, but did admit to calling the EBT card to determine an amount before going with Redenius when he withdrew money from the account.
