Truman chooses city clerk

TRUMAN — Truman City Council voted unanimously Monday to hire Bethanie Ekstrom as the new city clerk.

Pending her acceptance of the job, Ekstrom is expected to begin her duties July 2, working in tandem with longtime city clerk Monte Rohman until his retirement on Dec. 31. Rohman has been with the city for 36 years.

The council also agreed to offer Ekstrom a salary of $46,000 per year, as well as health insurance, two weeks vacation and eligibility for public employee retirement.

Council members briefly weighed whether to offer Ekstrom an incentive to move into Truman, but chose not to after considering that she lives at a rural address near Lewisville.

Council members and Rohman say they believe Ekstrom has the skills and potential to serve the city well. They noted that her former employers speak highly of her.

In a letter to Rohman, the mayor and council members, Ekstrom said she is looking forward to a job that matches her skills and education.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Crookston. She works currently as a county support specialist for Minnesota Valley Action Council in Fairmont.

Ekstrom is a former office manager and caseworker at the Salvation Army in Fairmont. Prior, she was an administrative assistant at Fairmont Opera House. She also has worked at Avery Weigh-Tronix in Fairmont and River Bend Business Products in Fairmont.

In other business, the council:

o Offered a reminder to residents that no ATVs or golf carts are allowed on the grass at Graf Park or around the municipal swimming pool. Council members discussed adding signage in appropriate locations to reinforce the message.

o Approved a request to allow a volleyball tournament on the practice football field on the north side of the high school, on land owned by the city. The tournament will take place during Truman Days, which are scheduled for July 26-29.
