Courthouse to host troupe

BLUE EARTH — Faribault County commissioners on Tuesday approved a request by a Twin Cities theater group to use the courthouse for a summer performance.

Former County Attorney Brian Roverud first addressed the board with the request at a meeting earlier this month. Roverud, representing Sod House Theater, a professional theater company from the Twin Cities, said the group has shown interest in using the courthouse during its summer tour.

“They were really impressed with the courthouse,” Roverud said. “They would really like to use it.”

Roverud said the production would involve use of the south lawn of the courthouse and the courtroom inside. The theater group would provide its own equipment as well as pay for use of the courthouse.

This year’s performance will be a bluegrass adaption of Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People,” which examines a community’s response to a local doctor threatening to expose that the water the town relies on for tourism is being poisoned. The performance will be made up of hired professionals and local performers.

Roverud said performance dates have yet to be set, but there will be two shows, either Aug. 2-3 or Aug. 4-5.

Roverud said the court administrator does not object to the use of the courthouse for the performance.

After a brief discussion, commissioners approved the request.
