United Methodist plans Sunday pancake brunch

Fairmont United Methodist church invites the community to a free pancake brunch from 10-11:30 a.m. (or until the food is gone) on Palm Sunday, March 24, at the church located at 119 E. 2nd St. (corner of Park St. and 2nd St.) in Fairmont. Serving will be in the Fellowship Hall (lower level of the church). The brunch will consist of pancakes, butter and syrup, breakfast sausage, caramel rolls, coffee, milk and orange juice. There will also be an Easter basket auction during the pancake brunch. Proceeds from the auction will help fund Summer Church Camp Scholarships. The church is handicap accessible; front entry (under the canopy); use the handicap ramp up to the elevator and select lower level to go to the fellowship hall. Rear entry; use the sidewalk ramp up to the rear entrance. The elevator is just inside the rear door; select lower level to go to the fellowship hall. Parking is available in the 2nd and 3rd Street municipal parking lots and on the street. Handicap parking is available in the 3rd Street municipal parking lot and in designated stalls on the street. Everyone is welcome.

CER to offer upcoming community activities

Fairmont Community Education & Recreation (CER) will offer two upcoming community activities. First, Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People, for ages 13+, will be held 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday, April 1, online via Zoom. In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. Learn to play piano the way professionals do-using chords. Since the class is being held online with Zoom you will be able to sit at your piano or keyboard at home and take this course with no pressure at all. And since this course includes an online book and online follow-up video lessons, you will be able to continue your practice and study on your own. An optional periodic online question and answer session is also included. A recording of the class is included as well. The course is partly lecture/demonstration and partly hands on instruction. Topics include: How chords work in a song, how to get more out of sheet music by reading less of it, how to form the three main chords, how to handle different keys and time signatures, how to avoid “counting” and how to simplify over 12,000 complex chords. The fee is $69. Registration closes March 25. Next, Instant Guitar for Hopelessly Busy People, for ages 13+, will be held 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, online via Zoom. Have you ever wanted to learn the guitar but simply find it difficult to find the time? In just a few hours you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment, and you won’t have to take private lessons to do it.  This crash course will teach you some basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away. Since this class is being held online with Zoom, you will be able to sit at home with your guitar and take this class without any pressure at all. And since the class includes an online book and online follow-up video lessons, you will be able to continue your practice and study on your own. An optional periodic online question and answer session is also included. A recording of the class is included as well. Class is limited to 15 students.  Topics include: How chords work in a song, how to form the three main types of chords, how to tune your guitar, basic strumming patterns, how to buy a good guitar (things to avoid), and how to play along with simple tunes.
