Martins fall to Young America in state quarterfinals
JORDAN — Despite eight strong innings from Windom draftee pitcher Collin Lovell, the Fairmont Martins were unable to get things going on offense Sunday and fell 1-0 to the Young America Cardinals in the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament quarterfinals at the Mini Met.
Lovell allowed seven hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out five in his start. Josh Smith pitched the ninth for the Martins, allowing one walk and striking out one.
Fairmont catcher Ethan Hurn’s bat wasn’t silenced Sunday as he went 3 for 4, but the Martins were never able to string enough hits together to get on the board as they faced a challenging pitcher in Plato draftee Reece Schwirtz. Schwirtz got the complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits and no walks in the win while striking out 12.
Young America got on the board for the lone run of the game in the top of the fourth after Matt Mann’s two-out, RBI double scored Isaac Hoffmann, who reached earlier on a leadoff single.
Fairmont had a chance to tie it in the ninth. After Lincoln Becker reached on a leadoff single, Schwirtz got back-to-back outs before Hurn collected his third hit of the game to put two on. Schwirtz forced a groundout to end the game moments later, however, ending Fairmont’s season with a 23-5 record and putting Young America in the state semifinals.

Spencer Chirpich got the complete-game shutout on the mound for Fairmont, allowing eight hits and just one walk while striking out six.
Fairmont got the scoring going in the fifth on Luke Becker’s RBI double. The Martins broke the game open in the seventh with a five-run inning that was led by a two-run double from Lincoln Becker.
Fairmont finished the scoring in the eighth on an RBI single from Shoen.
