Red Bulls net 5th at 13-team wrestling invite

JACKSON — Pierce Rohman and Torrey Paplow each captured individual wrestling championships to power the Martin County Red Bulls to a fifth-place showing during the 13-team Pizza Ranch Invitational on Saturday.
Ty Kolbe garnered third place at 160 pounds, while heavyweight Colby Schwichtenberg and 152-pounder Berent Kosbab each placed fourth to complement first-place performances by Rohman and Paplow to pace the Red Bulls’ point total of 107.
Adrian Area edged tournament host and Class A No. 1-ranked Jackson County Central, 168-165, for the team crown, with Hutchinson and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area sharing third place with scores of 155.
Rohman, who’s ranked No. 10 at 121 pounds in Class AA, defeated three state-ranked opponents to strike gold for the Red Bulls at 121 on the day.
Rohman edged Class A No. 4-ranked 114-pounder Moe Erdman of Adrian Area by a 9-7 overtime decision in the quarterfinals before squeezing out a 2-1 semifinal decision over Class AA No. 4-ranked 114-pounder Preston Xayachak of Windom/Mountain Lake Area.
Rohman then claimed his weight class by outdueling Class A No. 6-ranked 121-pounder Kayden Eller of Jackson County Central, 13-8, in the tournament finals.
Paplow, who was voted the season-opening Dick Maher Invitational’s outstanding wrestler on Dec. 2, compiled a 4-0 record to take home the 133-pound gold medal in Jackson on Saturday.
Paplow compiled a 16-5 major decision over Hutchinson’s Andrew Soderlund in first-round action before pinning Luverne’s Matthew Gangestad in the quarterfinals in 4:57.
Paplow continued his pinning ways in the semifinals by earning the slap of the canvas in 4:30 over Windom/Mountain Lake Area’s Kameron Koerner before edging Class A No. 10-ranked 127-pounder Isaac Rodriguez of Jackson County Central in the finals by a 9-7 decision.
Ty Kolbe followed a first-round bye with a fall in 3:56 over Western Christian’s Jason Vande Vegte during action in the 160-pound bracket.
Kolbe then lost a 15-0 technical fall to Class A No. 6-ranked 160-pounder Ryan Palmer of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in the semifinals. Palmer went on to pin Adrian Area’s Rilee Heidebrink for the gold medal in 1:18.
Kolbe displayed his resilience by posting an 8-3 wrestleback win over Jackson County Central’s Quinn Landherr before earning a fall in 5:27 over Wabasha-Kellogg’s Will Killeen in the bronze-medal match.
Kosbab opened 152-pound bracket action on Saturday by pressing Luverne opponent Cameron McCrary’s shoulders to the mat in 5:15 before doubling the score on LCWM Area’s Talan Osborne in the quarterfinals, 10-5.
Fulda/Murray County Central’s Quintin Lewis defeated Kosbab by a 6-1 semifinal decision before the Red Bull junior rallied for a 7-6 wrestleback win over Hutchinson’s Cody Tews.
Waseca’s Slade Barnett then eked out a 1-0 decision over Kosbab in the third-place match to claim the bronze medal.
Schwichtenberg received a first-round bye at heavyweight for the Red Bulls before edging Jackson County Central’s Micheal Hansen in the quarterfinals by a 3-0 decision.
Adrian Area’s Jaren Winselman pinned Schwichtenberg in 19 seconds during their semifinal match. Winselman then claimed Adrian Area’s only individual gold medal by pinning Western Christian’s Brooks McFarland in the 285-pound finals with a time of 1:10.
Schwichtenberg rebounded to net a 13-7 wrestleback victory over Adrian Area’s Devin Mazza before getting pinned by Hutchinson’s Evan Peirce in the third-place clash in 2:30.
Class A No. 1-ranked 145-pounder Nolan Ambrose of Jackson County Central and 114-pound Huskies teammate Dallas Gossen claimed the only individual crowns for the tournament runner-up. Ambrose also was named the event’s outstanding wrestler.
The Martin County Red Bulls compete in the two-day Redwood River Riot tournament starting at 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday in Redwood Falls.
