Redwood Valley ekes out win over Fairmont tennis

REDWOOD FALLS — Fairmont singles player Sebastian Castro and the doubles tandem of Anthony Stegge and Tyler Slama denied host Redwood Valley a sweep of both brackets during a 5-2 Big South Conference dual tennis meet Tuesday.

Sebastian Castro captured a straight-set victory over Yzykiel Rendon during solo play at the No. 4 position in the lineup. Castro captured a 6-3 decision in the opening set before posting a 6-2 win in the second segment for Fairmont.

Slama and Stegge converted a victory in the super-tiebreaker, that served as the decisive factor in lieu of a full third set, to best Redwood Valley’s Zack Lundeen and Sam Klabunde during second doubles action. Slama and Stegge claimed a 7-6 first-set tiebreaker by a 7-3 decision before Lundeen and Klabunde countered by taking the second set by a 6-3 decision.

Slama and Stegge salvaged the team tally by outdueling Lundeen and Klabunde by a 12-10 tiebreaker decision.

Fairmont’s Jack Hagen and Redwood Valley’s Andrew Muetzel locked up in a down-to-the-wire clash at first singles. Muetzel edged Hagen in an opening-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3) before Hagen regrouped and responded with a 6-2 second-set triumph to force a third segment. Muetzel prevailed via the super-tiebreaker by a 10-8 score.

Wylee Frederiksen and Simone Castro also exited the Redwood Falls courts with a victory at third doubles, but came up just short to Ben Jorgenson and Brianna Tucker. Frederiksen and Castro combined for a 6-3 first-set win before Jorgenson and Tucker countered with a 7-6 second-set victory on the strength of an 11-9 tiebreaker score. The Redwood Valley tandem then posted a 10-7 win in the super-tiebreaker to collect the point.

Redwood Valley’s Joe Davilla and Evan Cooper netted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Olivia Ortega and Carter Quist at first doubles, while Redwood Valley second singles netter Cole Johnson duplicated Davilla and Cooper’s winning decision. Johnson netted a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Fairmont’s Dominick Lund-May.

Kanyon Hicks rounded out Redwood Valley’s winning ways by posting a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Noah Vetter at the third spot

Fairmont plays host to Blue Earth Area at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
