Fairmont 12U hockey nets 1st-ever state bid

FAIRMONT — History in the making.

Fairmont’s 12U girls hockey team earned the program’s first-ever trip to the state tournament by capturing runner-up honors during last weekend’s regional event in Worthington.

Fairmont (33-6-1) opens the Minnesota Hockey 12U B State Tournament against Armstrong Cooper at 4 p.m. Friday, March 17, at the Faribault Ice Arena in Faribault.

The 75th edition of the elite event continues at the same venue on Saturday, March 18, before concluding on Sunday, March 19.

Lexi Haycraft produced a hat trick and Maya Earhart distributed two assists to help power Fairmont to a 4-1 first-round regional victory over Dodge County last Friday night in Worthington.

Mariel Parish contributed one goal to the winning performance, while Lauren Bettin and Halyn Haycraft each doled out one helper.

Alexis Sundeen recorded 11 saves between the pipes to net the win for Fairmont, which generated 17 shots on goal.

Lexi Haycraft then erupted for three goals and an assist, while Parish unleashed a game-high four assists to go with one goal to power Fairmont to an 8-1 second-round regional win over River Lakes last Saturday.

Kynlee Beemer, Bettin and Halyn Haycraft each supplied one goal and one helper to Fairmont’s victorious effort, while Evelyn Folkerts chipped in one goal.

Sundeen turned away 22 shots on net for Fairmont, which chalked up 19 shots on goal.

Emerson Demuth lit the lamp on the game-winner 1:49 into overtime to help eventual regional champion Marshall claim a 2-1 decision over Fairmont in Round 3 last Sunday.

Lexi Haycraft tallied an unassisted goal for Fairmont, which had just 11 shots on net. Sundeen turned away 18 shots to keep Fairmont close on the scoreboard.

Parish collected a hat trick and Lexi Haycraft produced two goals and one helper to steer Fairmont to a 9-2 final-round victory over Rochester last Sunday to lock up second place in the regional.

Kennedy Murphy, Kylie Flanagan, Bettin and Halyn Haycraft supplied one goal apiece for Fairmont, while Avery Kurt doled out an assist.

Sundeen recorded 11 saves to net the win for Fairmont, which made 29 shots on goal.

Marshall faces Wayzata at noon in first-round state tournament action March 17 in Faribault, Woodbury Black plays North Shore at 2 p.m. that day, while Rock Ridge squares off against Edina Green at 6 p.m. that night.

PeeWee Division

The Fairmont PeeWee ‘B’ hockey team netted a 1-2 record during the regional tournament last weekend in Marshall.

Austin posted a first-round 12-4 triumph over Fairmont.

Preston Geerdes and Tyler Pankow each generated two goals for Fairmont, Kane Wohlhuter distributed two assists, while Bryce Scholl chipped in a helper.

Pankow unleashed three goals and three assists to engineer Fairmont’s 7-4 second-round win over Luverne.

Geerdes collected two goals and one helper, Wohlhuter chipped in one net-finding shot and an assist, while Lucas Kotewa chipped in one goal.

Mankato then skated to an 11-2 third-round win over Fairmont last weekend in regional action.

Pankow generated two goals for Fairmont, Geerdes dished out two assists, while Wohlhuter added a helper.

Bantam Division

The Carlson Dental Bantam hockey team of Fairmont lost a pair of games during last weekend’s regional tournament in Waseca.

Rochester kicked off postseason action by defeating Fairmont by a 4-1 decision last Friday.

Preston Cepress accounted for Carlson Dental’s goal off a pass from Dayton Draper, while goaltender Kaden Olson recorded 35 saves between the pipes.

Buffalo then netted a 5-1 victory over Fairmont during second-round action last Saturday.

Gavin Kester cashed in an Axel Chapman assist for Fairmont’s only goal, while Brandon Hector delivered 36 saves.

The Carlson Dental Bantam team closed out its season with a 17-15 overall record.

10U Girls Division

The Fairmont 10U girls hockey squad compiled a 2-2 record during the district tournament Feb. 25-26 at Martin County Arena.

Geminnie Lopez and Logyn Luhmann each generated one goal and one assist to power Fairmont to a 2-0 win over Worthington last Saturday.

Nola Hazard turned away a game-best 31 shots on net to earn the shutout for Fairmont between the pipes.

Luhmann erupted for a hat trick and Hazard chalked up 11 saves to steer Fairmont to a 7-2 second-round victory over Windom last Saturday.

Ellie Steuer, Alayna Kurt, London Truesdell and Lopez each contributed one goal to Fairmont’s winning effort, while Truesdell added an assist.

Marshall then posted a 3-0 third-round triumph over Fairmont last Sunday. Hazard made 19 stops on the game.

New Ulm/Sleepy Eye then squeezed out a 2-1 win over Fairmont during the fourth round of the district event.

Lopez chalked up an unassisted goal for Fairmont, while Hazard turned away a game-best 35 shots on net.
