FAIRMONT — Marshall forward Owen Renslow and goaltender Gavin Welsh played key roles in making the proverb “all good things must come to an end” become a reality for the Fairmont Area Cardinals hockey team Thursday night.

Renslow generated one goal and distributed two assists, while Welsh recorded 22 saves to help the visiting Tigers scratch out a 4-1 Big South Conference victory over the Cardinals at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

Fairmont Area entered its 11th game of the season on a four-game winning streak.

Renslow staked Marshall to a 1-0 lead by scoring the first period’s lone goal at the 6:19 mark before Fairmont Area’s Brock Lutterman answered the challenge.

Lutterman smacked home the equalizer off a double-assist from Hartley Aust and Lucas Sommers to even the score at 1-all at the 12:20 juncture of the second frame.

Renslow, however, proved the offensive catalyst behind two of the Tigers’ three third-period goals to pull away from the Cardinals.

Renslow released a right-wing liner that Fairmont Area netminder Carson Johnson managed to deflect, but Marshall’s Andrew Seanor proved to be in the right place at the right time and tapped home the left-side rebound for the go-ahead goal at the 9:24 mark of the third.

Renslow then rushed the puck up the ice and forced Johnson to block his shot only to have the Tigers’ Joey Fossum settle the spinning rebound for a 12-foot right-wing slapper at the 6:53 mark.

Klayton Weller then jammed home a twine-finder through a small window between Johnson and the right pipe for a 4-1 lead late in the third. Zach Kramer’s behind-the-cage wrap-around pass set up the goal.

Johnson matched Welsh by finishing with 22 saves on the game for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (4-7) plays host to Luverne at 7 p.m. Monday night back at Martin County Arena.

Mauch set up Kalyn DeVlieger’s game-opening goal before Mauch buried a shot in the net off a pass from Mia Wichmann to stake Marshall to a 2-0 lead after one period.

Eliza Holmgren capped the Tigers’ offensive effort via a goal off a double-assist from Lily Verkindren and Kendal Beernaert during the second frame.

Bella Larson prevented the shutout by slapping home an unassisted goal for the Cardinals during the third period.

Netminder Hadley Artz generated a game-leading 33 saves for the Cardinals, who mustered only 10 shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (4-8-2) travels to Windom Area on Monday night.
