Pendergast, balanced effort propel Fairmont hoopsters by JCC

JACKSON — The Fairmont Cardinals utilized balanced scoring and rebounding to edge the Jackson County Central Huskies, 67-63, during Big South Conference basketball action Thursday night in Jackson.

Grace Pendergast connected for three 3-pointers to pace her team-best 12-point performance to complement pocketing four steals for Fairmont.

Jazlyn Geerdes contributed 11 points and six rebounds to the win, while Brylee Miller neared double-double territory by scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-best nine boards to go with distributing six assists.

Nevaeh Rahm chipped in nine points for Fairmont, while Olivia Ortega supplied eight points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Cardinals connected on 22 of 54 field goals, including 8 of 24 from behind the 3-point arc, and made 15 of 29 free throws on the contest.

Maci Farmer and Riley Cother each netted a game-best 21 points for JCC.

Fairmont (5-3) travels to Windom Area tonight.

Ellie Ortega collected six points, seven rebounds and five steals to help steer Fairmont to a 37-25 win over JCC during B-squad action Thursday.

Kennedy Becker topped the Cardinals with 13 points.

JCC defeated Fairmont, 38-30, during C-squad action Thursday.

Kayla Lowry tallied 16 points to top Fairmont.

North Union 49, West Hancock 29 — Olivia Von Bank produced 17 points, five boards and four steals to engineer the Warriors’ 20-point Top of Iowa Conference triumph on Thursday night in Armstrong.

Naomi Jones generated 15 points and six rebounds for North Union, which made 20 of 26 free throws on the game.

Libby Stevens supplied eight points for the Warriors, Emily Meyer delivered seven points and doled out three assists, Olivia Merrill grabbed six rebounds and Shelby Fraker pocketed four steals.

North Union (9-2) plays host to North Iowa tonight in Armstrong.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 65, Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 51 — McKenna Benck and Olivia Mattson combined for 44 points to power the Jaguars to a 14-point Valley Conference win over the Knights on Thursday night.

McKenna Benck tossed in a game-best 23 points to complement eight rebounds and five steals, while Mattson netted 21 points to go with seven boards and four blocked shots.

Gracie Zaharia pulled down seven rebounds for the Jaguars, Bethany Petrowiak grabbed five caroms and made four steals, while Brianna Petrowiak scored 13 points.

The Jaguars (7-3) play host to United South Central on Monday night in Northrop.

Martin County West 65, Nicollet 39 — Thea Anderson sank 5 of 6 free throws en route to tallying a game-best 15 points to stampede the Mavericks to a Valley Conference rout over the Raiders on Thursday night in Trimont.

Kari Matejka contributed 11 points to MCW’s winning ways, Emily Anderson and Ella Carlson netted eight points apiece, while Emily Schettler added seven points.

Martin County West (4-7) plays host to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 5:45 p.m. today in Trimont.

Boys Basketball

Minnesota Valley Lutheran 55, Martin County West 50 — Ben Pearson scored 17 points to help the Chargers rally in the second half for a five-point non-league victory over the Mavericks on Thursday night in Sherburn.

Zach Anderson poured in a game-leading 31 points, including a 13-for-14 performance at the free throw line, and grabbed 10 rebounds to garner a double-double for MCW. Anderson also blocked five shots.

Hunter Schmidt hit four 3-pointers to account for 12 points for the Mavericks, while Riley Kascht chipped in six rebounds.

Martin County West (6-6) plays host to Mankato Loyola at 7 p.m. tonight in Trimont.

West Hancock 58, North Union 52 — The Eagles squeezed out a six-point Top of Iowa Conference win over the Warriors on Thursday night in Armstrong.

Teagon Fothergill scored 12 points and pocketed three steals to top North Union, while Danyal Fothergill supplied 11 points and six rebounds.

Preston Guerdet collected eight points and four assists for the Warriors, Grady Madden netted eight points, Kody Irmiter pulled down nine rebounds, while Logan Odegaard added six boards.

North Union (7-5) plays host to North Iowa tonight in Armstrong.
