WINDOM — Whether it was the holiday spirit in the green Christmas socks she donned or liking the rims at the Windom Area gymnasium, senior guard Maggy Totzke eclipsed the Fairmont girls basketball program’s career mark for made 3-pointers on Wednesday.

Totzke poured in a game-best 17 points, including four trifectas, and distributed a co-game-high six assists, while teammate Cadee Becker collected 13 points, eight rebounds and a co-game-best six assists to power the Cardinals to a 72-27 flattening of the hometown Eagles in the Windom Area Holiday Invite’s championship game.

Totzke, a five-year varsity veteran, eclipsed the school record of 110 with — how ironic — her third 3-pointer of the game to cap a 12-0 offensive surge en route to a 26-8 lead at the 7:15 juncture of the opening half.

Totzke called for the basketball along the right wing, caught a perfect kick-out pass from Becker in the low post, elevated and snapped the nets to break the record set by former Fairmont standout Lexi Lunn in 2019.

“Kudos to Maggy for breaking the career 3-point record during this tournament,” said Cardinals’ head coach Sara Junkermeier. “I think our entire team likes playing on this court.”

Indeed. Totzke went 5 of 7 from behind the arc during Fairmont’s 82-40 win over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Tuesday to pace her team’s 13-for-19 performance from long range. The senior followed up by sinking 4 of 10 to top the Cardinals’ 9-for-25 effort from 3-point range Wednesday.

“I think it all comes down to confidence on the court,” said Junkermeier, whose lineup made 28 of 61 field goals overall, with nine different players scoring. “Our transition game was effective as the girls knew where everybody was supposed to be and we looked to hit the open player.”

Indeed. Totzke and Becker equally combined to dole out a dozen of the Cardinals’ 21 assists, with seven different players contributing at least one set-up pass.

Becker’s low-post leaners bookended Fairmont’s game-opening 10-0 run, with Rayah Quiring and Totzke draining 3s in between.

After Totzke’s record-setting 3 created an 18-point first-half lead, Ava Terfehr, Totzke and Emma Gudahl buried consecutive trifectas to help build an eventual 37-13 halftime edge.

Gudahl hit a 3-pointer to trigger the Cardinals’ 14-2 offensive landslide to open the second half and a 51-15 lead to create “running time” during the final 9 minutes.

Terfehr supplied nine points and three steals off Fairmont’s bench, Grace Pendergast and Gudahl contributed eight points apiece to the balanced attack, while Quiring produced seven points and five rebounds.

Brittney Mosloski and Abby Cihoski each added four points, with Mosloski chipping in three of the Cardinals’ 18 steals on the championship game. Becker’s boardwork also paced Fairmont’s 38-26 rebounding edge.
