Winnebago/Blue Earth legion baseball team opens sub-state vs. Pipestone

WABASSO — The Winnebago Post 82/Blue Earth Post 89 American Legion baseball team will literally throw out the first pitch on Day 1 of the Minnesota Southwest Sub-State Tournament in Wabasso.

Winnebago/Blue Earth (13-1), the District 2 Sub-District ‘C’ champion, opens sub-state action against Sub-District ‘A’ runner-up Pipestone at 11 a.m. Thursday.

United South Central of Wells, the Sub-District ‘C’ runner-up, squares off against Sub-District ‘B’ runner-up Jackson in a 2 p.m. first-round game before Sub-District ‘B’ champion Springfield battles Sub-District ‘A’ third-place finisher Minneota at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Sub-District ‘A’ winner Luverne completes the opening-round games by facing Sub-District ‘B’ third-place finisher Wabasso at 8 p.m. Thursday.

A pair of consolation-bracket games will kick off Friday’s sub-state action in Wabasso. The WBE–Pipestone loser will play the USC–Jackson loser at 11 a.m., followed by the Springfield–Minneota loser against the Luverne–Wabasso loser at 2 p.m.

Championship-bracket action starts at 5 p.m. Friday, with the winner between WBE and Pipestone squaring off against the winner between USC and Jackson.

The winner between Springfield and Minneota will cap Friday’s play at 8 p.m. against the winner of Luverne and Wabasso.

A pair of elimination games are scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. Saturday in Wabasso, followed by a battle of unbeatens in a 6 p.m. contest.

The Southwest Sub-State Tournament continues with a pair of consolation games at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, July 23, with the championship contest scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24. If a Game 2 is necessary in the double-elimination bracket, it will start at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 24.
