FAIRMONT — Hunter Schmidt carded two birdies and seven pars to lead the Mavericks.

Schmidt’s 1-under par 34 led Martin County West to a 187-201 win over the Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jaguars during Valley Conference boys golf action at Rose Lake Golf Course in Fairmont on Monday.

Each team had three girls compete, leaving incomplete team scores.

Schmidt birdied the par-4 first hole to open the day, then strung together consecutive pars on holes Nos. 3-8 before closing his round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole.

“We played well, our focus this whole year has been fun with a little less focus on our scores,” MCW assistant coach Matt Larson said. “We just want to get out on the course and have fun.”

The Jaguars’ Colby Brudelie carded one par and a birdie on the par-3 fifth hole to record the runner-up score of 44.

“It was a good tune-up for our conference meet (today),” Jaguar head coach Jim Utermarck said. “It was definitely good for Hunter (Schmidt), he played well, he’s just a really good golfer. Colby Brudelie shined for us, he’s done really well in the last couple of meets. I think 44 is his personal-best and it’s coming at the right time.”

Evan Domeier parred three holes to record the Mavericks’ second score of 46, while Jakob Fischer and Wyatt Luhman each recorded one par to record matching 51s for the Jaguars.

Carter Lyons holed one par putt to record the third MCW score of 53 and Evan Roben carded a 54 for the Mavericks’ final counting score.

“We’re just trying to keep playing well and grow some young golfers,” Larson said. “We want to get some of these young kids hooked on golf.”

Louis Bowers recorded the Jaguars’ final counting score of 55.

Lance Stevens parred the ninth hole to record a 58 for the Jaguars, while Zach Flohrs added a 60.

The Jaguars’ Amber Steen shot the medalist score of 55 to lead the girls’ portion of the meet, while MCW’s Shanna Amborn hit the runner-up score of 64.

Brenna Heifner carded the Mavericks’ second score of 68.

Tessa Johnson recorded the second Jaguar score of 75, while Amelia Heald shot a 78 for the Jaguars.

Lily Kragman-Gibson recorded the final MCW score of 80.

Both MCW and the Jaguars go to Terrace View Golf Course in Mankato for the Valley Conference Meet at 9:30 a.m. today.
