Fairmont tracksters capture both crowns at 5-team meet

NEW ULM — In the first split meet of this season’s new track & field format, Fairmont captured both girls and boys team competitions at the five-team New Ulm Invitational on Thursday.

Hudson Artz claimed three gold medals to help lead the Cardinal boys to a first-place team finish with 77 points — four ahead of runner-up Waseca.

Artz took his first top spot in the 100-meter dash when he sprinted to a time of 11.42, while Fairmont’s Andrew Johnson took fifth in 12.393. Artz then took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.68, followed by the Cardinals’ David Maakestad in 57.54 for third.

Artz finished his day with a gold in the 200-meter dash, running a time of 23.35.

Armando Hernandez took two golds in the field events to help the Cardinals’ strong performance off the track.

Hernandez led the long jump with a leap of 18-3, while Isaiah Lockwood (17-6) placed third and Prince Lebbi (16-11) took fifth for the Cardinals.

Hernandez also cleared the highest bar in the high jump at 5-6, while Maakestad cleared 5-2 for fourth.

Lockwood added a fifth-place leap of 35-7.25 to help power the Cardinal jumpers, while Kainen Craig placed second in the pole vault when he cleared 9 feet even.

Noah Rahm and Sawyer Tordsen took second and third, respectively, in both the shot put and the discus.

Rahm tossed the shot 41-2 and the discus 116-8, while Tordsen heaved the shot 40-7.5 and the discus 110-1.

Back on the track, Fairmont’s 4×400-meter relay team of Andrew Johnson, Blaze Geiger, Maakestad and Craig took gold with a time of 3:51.55, while the 4×200-meter crew of Hernandez, Trey Tumbleson, Lockwood and Maakestad finished second in 1:43.72.

Fairmont’s 4×100-meter relay team of Elijah Johnson, Hernandez, Geiger and Lebbi finished second in 49.49, while the 4×800-meter crew of Ty Nawrocki, Connor Artner, Gage Cyphers and Isaac Sheard took fourth place in 10:01.85.

Craig added a silver in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.41, while Andrew Johnson took fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:25.05.

Alex Cruz finished fifth for the Cardinals in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:33.33 for the final Cardinal point-scoring performance.

Laura Thompson led the Cardinal girls once again, claiming three golds in three events.

Thompson took first in the 1,600-meter with a time of 5:46.14, more than 30 seconds ahead of teammate Tabitha Thatcher, who took second at 6:19.52.

Thompson then claimed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.42, then earned gold in the 4×400-meter relay alongside teammates Carissa Saxton, Bella Larson and Ellie Ortega with a time of 4:37.91.

The wins helped lead the Cardinal girls to a team win with 108.5 points.

The Cardinals started the girls’ portion of the meet with a win in the 4×800-meter relay when Ortega, Carys Gudahl, Saxton and Hannah Neusch ran to a time of 11:05.49, then the Cardinals claimed four of five scoring spots in the high hurdles.

Ellie Hernes earned first in 17.46, with Brooklyn Meyer close behind at 18.21 for second.

Hadley Artz took third in 18.32 and Jazlyn Geerdes took fifth in 19.92.

Sabrina Segar claimed second in the 100-meter dash when she sprinted to a time of 13.51, while Fairmont’s 4×200-meter relay crew of Emily Frank, Karalyn Closs, Ellie Schultze and Corene Moeller finished second in 2:04.9.

The Cardinals’ 4×100-meter team of Hope Klanderud, Meyer, Larson and Segar placed fourth in 55.65, before Saxton took third in the 400-meter dash in 1:11.01.

Hernes added another hurdle gold when she ran to a time of 53.79 in the 300-meter hurdles, while Artz finished fourth in 58.08 and Geerdes took fifth in 1:00.1.

Schultze took fourth in the 200 with a time of 29.91, while Macy Hanson took second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:37, just ahead of Neusch’s third-place time of 12:51.02 and Gudahl’s fourth-place time of 13:41.37.

Fairmont’s girls also put up a strong showing in the field events. Natalie Tonne claimed gold in both the shot (36-8.5) and discus (82-10), while Sabrina Segar took fifth in the shot with a heave of 28-1.

Rachel O’Connor took fourth in the pole vault when she cleared the bar at 7-6, just ahead of Segar who took fifth after clearing the 7-0 bar.

Hannah Linse took second for the Cardinals in the high jump at 4-4, while Vanessa Bliesmer cleared 4-2 for fourth.

Ellie Hernes took gold in the triple jump with a leap of 35-4.5, while Frank took third at 31-4. Hernes added a silver medal in the long jump at 15-7, while Meyer hit 15-1 for fourth.

Fairmont travels to Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall for quad action against Marshall, Pipestone Area and Windom at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
