No. 3 Red Bulls flatten foes in wrestling triangular
SHERBURN — The Class AA No. 3-ranked Martin County Red Bulls continued their hot streak with another two wins.
Martin County beat Worthington 54-21, then took a 67-3 win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial during triangular action Thursday night in Sherburn.
Rylan Cuter got the Red Bulls started in their initial dual against Worthington with a late pin.
Cutler was dominant throughout the match, building a 13-0 lead on two takedowns and three three-point near falls. With 106-pound opponent Alex Galvez starting the third period in the down position, Cutler used his control to turn Galvez for a pin in 5:24.
Oscar Galvez then earned Worthington’s first points with a 5-1 decision at 113 pounds against Cooper Steuber before the Red Bulls’ No. 9-ranked 120-pounder Jesse Potts took a forfeit to put Martin County ahead 12-3.
The Red Bulls’ No. 1-ranked 126-pounder Jaxson Rohman worked his way to a 31-14 technical fall in 4:00, using the entirety of the first two periods to take down Zayden Abdulrahman 14 times and adding a three-point near fall to build his advantage. The win hit a milestone for the Red Bulls’ career win leader, notching win number 250 for Rohman’s career.
Martin County’s No. 8-ranked 132-pounder Kain Sanders kept the Red Bulls’ run going with a pin of Miat Htoo in 3:03, then Aden Welcome needed only 21 seconds to pin Moo Bleh at 138.
The Red Bulls’ No. 3-ranked 138-pounder Lucas Jagodzinske moved to 145 to face Damon Schutz, where Jagodzinske used a takedown, an escape, a three-point near fall and a reversal to build an 8-2 decision.
Carver Rohman took a forfeit at 152 to put the Red Bulls up 38-3, then Martin County’s No. 2-ranked 145-pounder Connor Simmonds jumped to 160 to face off with Jaden Hennings.
Simmonds used three takedowns, an escape and a three-point near fall to build a 10-2 major decision.
The Red Bulls’ No. 4-ranked 160-pounder Blake Jagodzinske kept the scoring streak going with a quick pin of 170-pound opponent Kevin Galvez in 1:09, but Kent Lais stopped the run when he earned six points for Worthington with a pin of Gage Cyphers in 1:49.
Tanner Hennings earned six more points for the Trojans with a pin of Wyatt Williamson in 3:36, then brother and No. 10-ranked 220-pounder Cole Hennings used nearly every second of a battle with Max Olson for a pin in 5:57.
The pair of 220-pounders fought back and forth, with Olson taking a 10-7 lead into the final period. Olson and Hennings started the final period neutral, then Hennings forced a takedown and a three-point near fall to go ahead 12-10 before Olson forced a reversal to tie the matchup at 12 with 34 seconds left. Hennings forced a reversal of his own with 11 seconds left, then turned Olson to his back for the late pin.
Alec Thompson earned the Red Bulls their final points of the matchup with a quick pin of Octavio Flores, needing only 42 seconds to earn a slap of the mat.
“I thought it was a great effort to win by all of our guys,” Martin County head coach Adam Williamson said of the Red Bulls’ sweep. “It was an awesome team effort for senior night.”
Both Jagodzinskes, Simmonds and Jaxson Rohman were honored as seniors after the Worthington dual for their contributions to the Red Bulls lineup.
“The seniors carried the team through tonight,” Williamson said. “Their leadership has been invaluable all season.”
Cutler got the Martin County dual with LCWM started with a pin of Logan Quade in 1:24 at 106 pounds. Ryan Palmer then earned the Knights’ lone points of the dual with a 4-0 decision over Steuber at 113.
Potts got the Red Bulls’ finishing run going with a pin of Talan Osborne in 1:36 at 120, then Jaxson Rohman took a forfeit at 126.
Sanders continued the run when he earned a slap of the mat against Griffin Gimenez in 3:27, then Lucas Jagodzinske used an escape, a takedown and two reversals to build a 7-4 decision at 138 against Tucker Wills.
Welcome used three takedowns and a reversal to build an 8-3 decision for the Red Bulls at 145 against Nick Slater, then Simmonds worked his way to a 16-7 lead near the end of the first period at 152 before turning Ean Gilman onto his back for a pin in 1:55.
Carver Rohman borrowed his brother’s usual catch-and-release strategy to build a 21-9 major decision against Alex Harnitz at 160, then Blake Jagodzinske took a forfeit at 170 to put the Red Bulls ahead 46-3.
Cyphers and Olson reversed their fortunes from the Worthington dual. Cyphers pinned Jermaine Arrington in 1:01 at 182, then Olson battled to an 8-6 decision over Brendan Jones at 195.
Olson and Jones were tied at 3 going into the final period, then Olson let Jones out of the down starting position, putting Jones up 4-3. Jones forced a takedown with 1:00 left to build his lead to 3, then Olson forced a reversal with 43 seconds left to take the lead down to 6-5. Olson feigned letting Jones out of his control, then jumped as Jones began standing, taking him to his back and forcing a three-point near fall as the final buzzer sounded to take his two-point win.
Wyatt Williamson took a forfeit at 220, then Thompson pinned Alex Sullivan in 1:38 to close out the 285-pound match.
“We’ve got to just keep our guys wrestling good matches,” Williamson said of what he wants his wrestlers to do going into the start of the section tournament next week. “Just keep pushing conditioning in practice and wrestling at a high level. We’ve got one more tune-up Saturday.”
Martin County (23-1) plays host to Jackson County Central at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sherburn, then hosts the start of the Section 2AA tournament next Thursday in Fairmont.
