FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Area Cardinals iced out the Waseca Bluejays 9-0 in Big South Conference girls hockey play Tuesday night at Martin County Arena.

Mackenzie Householder netted the 60th goal of her career, but it was Emily Sokoloski who led the Cardinals with four points via two assists and two goals.

Householder picked off right where she left off against Waseca. Eleven seconds into the first period Householder netted an unassisted wrist-shot goal to make the score 1-0. Sokoloski added her first of two goals when she lit the lamp at the 9:20 juncture to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

The Bluejays’ only real shot came on a breakaway by Jacklynn Jevning that defender Alexis Newville tracked down and stopped to prevent the goal.

Householder found the back of the net a second time in the first period when she gathered the puck and fired in a wrist shot to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.

“She’s (Householder) on fire and she’s obviously a staple for us in terms of putting points on the board,” Cardinals head coach Ashley Olson said. “I’m just telling her to keep doing what she’s doing.”

The Cardinals finished the first period up 5-0 with goals by Sokoloski and Brooklyn Meyer.

In the second period, Meyer scored to put the Cardinals up 6-0 before Tegan Roskop netted a goal off a double from Sokoloski and Jayda Healey.

The Cardinals added a goal with 5:49 left when Karissa Newville lit the lamp for the first time as a varsity player for an 8-0 lead.

“Our top two lines are really on fire this year in terms of goal production,” Olson said. “They’re really putting high numbers back for us and that’s not something that we’re used to. The intensity is good and I’m proud of the girls and moving forward we’re going to keep up that intensity.”

Cardinals goalkeeper Hadley Artz faced pressure in the second period. Artz made two saves by catching the puck and stayed tough around the net by disallowing Bluejays’ rebounded shots to get into the goal. Artz finished the game with 12 saves and the shutout.

“Hadley’s a strong goaltender,” Olson said. “She knocked away a few good ones tonight and she had one goal that went by her in Waseca. That game could’ve easily been a shutout, too, but that was her first one this year and I’m sure we’ll see a couple more.”

Fairmont Area (3-0) travels to New Ulm on Thursday night for another conference contest.
