Pipestone hoopsters hand 1st loss to Fairmont

PIPESTONE — The Pipestone Area Arrows capitalized on 80 percent free throw shooting and 41 percent field-goal accuracy to gradually pull away for a 53-39 Big South Conference basketball win over the Fairmont Cardinals on Monday night.

Zach Jorgensen neared double-double territory by scoring nine points to go with pulling down eight rebounds for Fairmont, which experienced its first loss of the season in three outings. Jorgensen also pocketed three steals.

Sawyer Tordsen tallied a co-team-best nine points for the Cardinals, while teammates Tanner Rosch and Jacob Crissinger supplied seven points apiece.

Fairmont made 14 of 45 field goals, including just 4 of 18 from 3-point distance, and connected on 7 of 13 free throws on the game.

The Cardinals (2-1) hit the road to Blue Earth Area on Friday night for another conference game.

Pipestone downed Fairmont in B-squad action, 50-30, Monday night.

Trey Tumbleson scored six points to top the Cardinals, while Owen Burmeister chipped in five points.

Blue Earth Area 92, Jackson County Central 50 — The Bucs utilized a balanced scoring attack again, and Cameron Anderson eclipsed the 1,000-point career barrier, to flatten the Huskies by 42 points during Big South Conference action Monday night in Blue Earth.

Austin Thielfoldt poured in a game-best 20 points to top a Blue Earth Area arsenal that featured four players in double figures and two more with seven or more points. Thielfoldt also distributed three assists.

Anderson, who finished with 13 points on the night, swooshed one of his three 3-pointers during the opening half to clear the historic mark.

Ashton Lloyd contributed 15 points, pulled down seven boards and doled out three assists for the Bucs, while Braden Gudahl hit three 3s to highlight his 14-point effort to complement distributing five assists.

Will Howard scored nine points for BEA, while Sam Keister netted seven points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.

The Bucs capitalized at the charity stripe by sinking 22 of 30 for 73 percent to go with 10-for-22 shooting from behind the 3-point arc.

Blue Earth Area (4-0) plays host to Fairmont on Friday night.

Girls Basketball

Martin County West 59, Cleveland 31 — Lucy Larson netted 14 points, while Marissa Whitehead supplied 12 points and three assists to steer the Mavericks to a 28-point Valley Conference victory over the Clippers on Monday night in Trimont.

Emily Dunlop collected eight points and eight rebounds for MCW, Emily Anderson scored seven points, while Katie Lange and Kari Matejka grabbed five boards apiece.

Martin County West (2-1) plays host to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Thursday night in Trimont.

Forest City 57, North Union 35 — The Indians avenged an earlier season loss to the Warriors by posting a 22-point Top of Iowa Conference win Monday night in Forest City, Iowa.

Sam Nielsen topped North Union by collecting 12 points and pulling down seven rebounds, while Olivia Von Bank netted 11 points and grabbed seven boards. Von Bank also garnered five steals.

Vanessa Von Bank hit two 3-pointers to generate six points, while Cassie Beadle made three steals.

North Union (10-5) travels to Belmond-Klemme tonight.
