Quiring guides Fairmont hoopsters to win over St. James Area

ST. JAMES — The Fairmont Cardinals tipped off the season by building a 29-10 halftime lead over the St. James Area Saints and never looked back during Big South Conference girls basketball action Thursday night in St. James.

Forward Rayah Quiring produced a team-best 13 points to top the Cardinals’ balanced offensive performance, while post player Cadee Becker and guard Madysen Allen each contributed 10-point efforts to the winning ways.

Becker shared team-best rebounding honors with Brittney Mosloski by pulling down six caroms apiece, while Mosloski added an eight-point performance.

Faith Olson collected seven points and shared team defensive accolades with Allen by garnering four steals each, while Allen distributed a team-leading three assists.

The Cardinals connected on 22 of 52 field goals overall for 42 percent, including 5 of 18 from behind the 3-point arc for 27 percent. Fairmont also made 7 of 10 free throws during its first game of the campaign.

Becker and Mosloski paced the Cardinals’ 32-22 edge on the boards, while Olson and Allen helped the red-and-white post a 12-6 advantage in thefts.

Fairmont (1-0) travels to Lake Crystal tonight for a newly-inserted nonconference game.

Ava Terfehr generated 14 points to guide Fairmont to a season-opening 42-22 triumph over St. James Area on Thursday night in St. James.

Nevaeh Rahm contributed 11 points to the Cardinals’ winning ways, while Hope Klanderud supplied six points.

Fairmont (1-0) travels to Jackson County Central on Monday night.

Boys Basketball

Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC 67, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 40 — Center Adam Heckman scorched the Truman gymnasium nets on 10-for-12 shooting from 2-point distance to highlight a game-best 22-point performance in topping the Jaguars’ 27-point rout over the Bulldogs during Valley Conference action Thursday night.

Adam Heckman also pulled down five rebounds and pocketed a team-leading four steals, while Matt Heckman produced 13 points, four rebounds and four assists in the Jaguars’ winning effort.

Cael Jaskulke scored 13 points and pulled down five boards for the Jaguars, while Louis Bowers netted eight points and distributed three assists. Owen Wolter doled out three assists and Jakob Fischer grabbed five rebounds to round out the Jaguars’ efforts.

The Jaguars made 24 of 37 shots from 2-point range for 64.9 percent, 4 of 16 behind the 3-point arc and 7 of 11 at the free throw line.

The Jaguars (2-1) travel to Alden-Conger next Thursday night.
