Bishop Garrigan sweeps basketball pair from North Union
ALGONA, Iowa — Bishop Garrigan senior Angelo Winkel entered Friday night’s Top of Iowa Conference basketball game averaging a double-double of 22.2 points and 14.0 rebounds per outing.
Add another one to the Golden Bears’ 6-foot-7 post player’s impressive totals.
Winkel poured in a game-best 24 points, including a pair of two-handed baseline dunks, and grabbed 15 rebounds to power Bishop Garrigan to a 60-26 triumph over the North Union Warriors.
Kyle Schaaf delivered 14 points for the Golden Bears, who built a 21-10 first-quarter lead before limiting the Warriors to only two second-quarter points en route to a 40-12 margin by intermission.
Andrew Fogarty connected for a game-leading four 3-pointers to produce 12 points for Bishop Garrigan, while teammate Joseph Meis netted seven points — all in the opening 16 minutes.
Colten Neusch came off the North Union bench to generate a team-best nine points to complement four rebounds.
Gage Madden netted six points — all in the first half — for the Warriors, Logan Odegaard pulled down a team-high six rebounds to go with three points, while Aidan Fries chipped in four points and three steals.
North Union (0-7) plays host to Lake Mills at 7:30 p.m. Monday night in Armstrong in another conference game. Bishop Garrigan (4-3) plays an intracity contest at Algona High School at 4:45 p.m. today.

Bishop Garrigan 67, North Union 17 — Sophomore center Audi Crooks delivered a game-best double-double performance to power the Iowa Class 1A, No. 1-ranked Golden Bears to a 50-point Top of Iowa Conference rout over the Warriors on Friday night.
Crooks tossed in a game-best 21 points and pulled down 11 boards to steer Bishop Garrigan to a 23-6 lead at halftime.
Molly Joyce connected for three 3-pointers to pace her 17-point performance for the Golden Bears to complement five steals and four assists.
Kaylyn Meyers also made three 3s to top her 12-point effort, garnered nine rebounds and pocketed four steals for Bishop Garrigan.
Naomi Jones came off the North Union bench to pour in a team-leading 11 points to go with six rebounds.
Alivia Charlton supplied five points and a team-best eight boards for the Warriors, Cassie Beadle pocketed five steals and grabbed four rebounds, while Libby Stevens added four rebounds.
North Union (5-3) plays host to Lake Mills on Monday night in Armstrong. Bishop Garrigan (8-0) travels to Algona High today for a 3:30 p.m. game.
