Canby gridders squeeze by Martin Co. West, 13-6

MCW's Tanner Sinn

CANBY — Defensive back Jake Wagner’s interception at Canby’s 8-yard line with 2:14 remaining in regulation helped seal the hometown Lancers’ narrow 13-6 high school football victory over the Martin County West Mavericks on Saturday afternoon at Armitage Field in Canby.

The Lancers, who lost their first two games of the pandemic-modified schedule against perennial powerhouses Dawson-Boyd and Minneota, reached the scoreboard first during the defensive-dominated clash.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Canby quarterback Will Varcoe sprinted 15 yards to paydirt for a 6-0 lead with 7:14 remaining in the second frame.

Martin County West, however, answered the challenge during the ensuing series to knot the game at 6-all. Quarterback Blake Jagodzinske connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Sinn with 5:26 remaining before halftime.

Running back Evan Weber staked Canby to a lead it would not relinquish for the duration. Weber crossed the goal line on a 24-yard run before Wagner kicked the PAT for a 13-6 edge as time elapsed in the third quarter.

The Mavericks’ defense then delivered a key turnover during the fourth quarter to give the visitors a chance to tie or go ahead. Hayden Jahnke recovered a fumble, that was forced by teammate Max Olson, at the Canby 7-yard line with 6:56 left in the game.

Unfortunately for MCW, a holding penalty and a no-call on a contested Maverick pass to the end zone turned over the football to the Lancers on downs.

Wagner’s pick deep into his own territory iced the Lancers’ narrow victory during the Mavericks’ seasonal debut.

Blake Jagodzinske completed 8 of 12 passes for 140 yards and one TD for MCW, while Carter Lyon made four receptions for 37 yards. Connor Simmonds supplied two catches for 37 yards, while Zach Anderson added one grab for 6 yards. Joseph Forsberg topped the Mavericks’ ground game with 31 yards on 14 carries.

Simmonds, Blake Jagodzinske and Lucas Jagodzinske each collected seven tackles to top MCW’s defensive effort, while Olson and Sinn supplied six and five stops, respectively.

Martin County West (0-1) travels to Lake Crystal on Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Southland 44, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 0 — The Class 9-Man, No. 9-ranked Rebels rushed for 302 yards and passed for 83 more to highlight a shutout over the Jaguars on Saturday night in Adams.

Southland (3-0) built a 32-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Kaiden Musser topped the Jaguars’ defensive unit by recording eight tackles, while teammate Kaden Moon delivered 6 1/2 tackles. Payton Strausen contributed five stops to the effort.

Owen Wolter ran 19 times for 40 yards to top GHEC/Truman’s offense, while completing 3 of 11 passes for 69 yards.

Cael Jaskulke garnered two receptions for 43 yards for the Jaguars, while Musser caught one pass for 26 yards.
