Fairmont girls tennis team wins Olsen’s debut via shutout

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals girls tennis lineup made first-year head coach Laura Olsen’s seasonal debut a memorable one.

Fairmont’s netters persevered in Monday’s searing heat by posting two-set wins at all four singles positions and three doubles spots to pace a 7-0 triumph over the River Valley Wildcats at the Cardinal Courts.

“I thought for it being our first match of the season and playing in 90-degree temperatures, the girls proved mentally tough across the board,” said Olsen, whose roster netted its initial Big South Conference East Division dual meet of 2020.

Maggy Totzke staked the hometown Cardinals to a quick lead on the team ledger by exiting the courts in less than an hour. Totzke coasted to back-to-back 6-0 set wins against Kiera Lafferty at No. 3 singles.

Claire Nemmers and Briana Joseph then wrapped up team points Nos. 2 and 3 for Fairmont by producing identical set scores during singles action. Nemmers netted a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Brooklyn Moldan at first singles, while Joseph duplicated those set totals in downing Kaydince Thoms at the second singles spot.

Ironically, both Nemmers and Joseph lost their respective first games of their fall debuts before finding the range on their serves and baseline blasts to create a 3-0 team lead.

Libby Totzke and Hope Klanderud then combined skills at third doubles to garner the official decisive team point for the Cardinals. Libby Totzke and Klanderud downed Lexanna Lazatin and Jasmyne Windschitl in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

“We (coaching staff) moved some players around in the lineup, and our girls found new ways to win today,” said Olsen.

Lauren Green, who played the majority of her matches at No. 4 singles a year ago, combined forces with sibling Shannon Green at No. 2 doubles during Monday’s season-opener. The Greens’ sister act proved potent as the pair also posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision in defeating Alexis Garza and Erika Lozano.

Abi Peyman, who filled the No. 4 singles position vacated by Lauren Green, displayed her hard-hitting ways by downing Taylor Berkner in back-to-back sets, 6-1, 6-4, to add to the Cardinals’ team point total.

Emily Hagen and Lauren Davis then capped Fairmont’s shutout victory by delivering a 6-0, 6-3 loss to River Valley opponents Megan Stevens and Sydne Wahl at the No. 1 doubles position.

“It’s definitely a nice way to start the season,” said first-year Cardinals’ assistant coach Tim Slama.

Fairmont (1-0) plays host to New Ulm at 4:30 p.m. Thursday back at the Cardinal Courts in another Big South Conference East Division dual meet.

River Valley (0-1) plays host to St. Peter on Thursday in Sleepy Eye.
