North Union’s Steinberger, Nielsen earn all-state softball honors

SWEA CITY — … and the hits keep coming for Hope Steinberger, Sam Nielsen and their North Union Warrior softball teammates this summer.

Steinberger and Nielsen doubled up their postseason diamond accolades from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union this week by being selected to the Class 2A all-state softball teams after joining Warrior teammates Olivia Von Bank, Emily Meyer, Vanessa Von Bank, Kaylee Tirevold, Cassie Beadle and Maggie Engelby on the all-Top of Iowa Conference West Division teams in July.

Steinberger, a perennial Sentinel All-Area softball choice, earned a spot on the Iowa Class 2A all-state first team for her outstanding accomplishments on the field, while Nielsen garnered selection to the all-state second team for her stellar contributions to the Warriors’ vastly-improved 12-5 pandemic-shortened campaign.

Steinberger closed out her prolific prep softball career by etching her name in the No. 1 spot in her conference’s division in runs scored (29) and stolen bases (20) to complement sharing the top spot in triples (3).

The senior centerfielder also placed No. 2 in league play in hits (31), batting average (.525) and on-base percentage (.582) this summer. Steinberger also produced six doubles and one home run en route to 15 RBIs and an incredible .780 slugging percentage.

Nielsen topped the conference in singles (24) en route to the league’s No. 3 batting average at .521. The sophomore left fielder scored 15 runs, reached base at a .549 clip and slugged opposing hurlers’ deliveries at a .542 pace. Nielsen added one extra-base hit — a double — to complement six RBIs and 12 stolen bases on the abbreviated campaign.

Ironically, freshman shortstop Olivia Von Bank and freshman pitcher Emily Meyer also generated state-worthy statistics to help North Union’s program turn the corner in becoming both a conference and state contender this year.

Von Bank utilized her lethal swing to topped the entire Top of Iowa Conference West Division in slugging percentage (.815), tied for the league’s No. 1 position in RBIs (25), placed second in doubles (8) and shared second place in HRs (2).

Von Bank — who joined Steinberger, Nielsen and Meyer on the all-conference first team — also finished No. 3 in the league in stolen bases (16) and runs scored (23), while tying for third in hits (26) and triples (2). She also hit .481 with a .533 on-base percentage.

Meanwhile, Meyer evolved into the West Division’s premier pitcher this summer, topping the league statistical charts in four different major categories. The hard-throwing right-hander recorded the conference’s most wins (12), lowest ERA (2.33) and most strikeouts (87), while sharing top honors in fielding percentage (1.000). She also was No. 2 in the league in innings pitched (93).

Cassie Beadle, a sophomore third baseman; Kaylee Tirevold, a senior catcher; and junior second baseman Vanessa Von Bank each earned selection to the Top of Iowa Conference West Division’s second team for their outstanding efforts on the diamond.

Sophomore first baseman Maggie Engelby received honorable mention to complete the Warriors’ all-league accolades.
