Segar aims to floor foes at state

WELCOME — Sabrina Segar qualified for the Class A individual state gymnastics meet for a third consecutive season, but the Martin County Area Magic junior standout has added another event to this year’s agenda.

Segar, a three-time state competitor on the floor exercise, will double her time on the Roy Wilkins Auditorium equipment starting at 11 a.m. Saturday when she steps onto the vault runway at the St. Paul-based sports facility.

Segar, who captured fourth place on the vault with a score of 9.05 during last Saturday’s Section 3 Meet in Worthington, will join her fellow sectional qualifiers during the Class A state meet’s second overall rotation.

“Sabrina will throw a tuck Tsuk (Tsukahara) to start with and if she hits it, we’ll have her go for a pike (Tsuk) on the second one,” said Martin County Area head coach Beraiah Peterson. “There will be a lot of Tsuks at state, so you need a vault that really stands out, especially that early in the competition.

“I just want her (Segar) to land it (Tsuk), and it’s all good after that.”

Segar then will wait until the eighth and final rotation of the entire Class A individual state competition to display her high-level floor routine.

“She’ll definitely get a chance to show off her strongest event during the last individual rotation of the day,” said Peterson. “Her goal is to break into the top 25 this year, and she has the athleticism, as well as the skills in her routine, to achieve that.”

Segar produced a 34th-place showing with a 9.125 floor score during the 2018 state competition before generating a 9.3-scored performance en route to 29th place in 2019.

Peterson said Segar will open her initial tumbling sequence on the floor with a one-and-a-half twisting full before executing a handspring to front full during her middle pass. The Magic captain will end her third tumbling pass with a full twist.

“Her jumps have looked clean, her tumbling has been solid and she’s gotten a lot stronger overall on the floor,” said Peterson. “It’s a good draw to go last, so maybe that’s a good sign of things to come Saturday.”

Segar, who struck gold with a first-place floor total of 9.475 during this year’s Big South Conference Meet, netted runner-up accolades during the Section 3 floor competition with a 9.225 performance.

So, how is Segar getting prepared for her third trip to St. Paul?

“Obviously, we (coaching staff) will have her focus on floor and vault during this week’s practice, but I also want her to work on some new skills on the (balance) beam and (uneven parallel) bars,” said Peterson. “I don’t want to tire her out on her specialties before she gets to execute them at state.

“I’ve invited our gymnasts to work out with her this week and give her the support you need to be ready for state. It’s hard to stay motivated by yourself, but her teammates will help out in that area.”

Segar will square off against seven medal-winners returning from the 2019 Class A state individual competition on Saturday at Wilkins Auditorium.

Detroit Lakes’ Jackson Hegg earned the bronze medal in last year’s state all-around, while Melrose Area’s Camryn Brinkman will look to improve upon her fourth-place showing in the all-around.

Hegg also is the only returning state medalist back on both the floor exercise and uneven bars. Hegg captured the Class A state crown on the unevens in 2019, while netting sixth place on the floor.

Hegg, who placed fourth a year ago, and St. Paul Highland Park’s Lucy Lipscomb, who finished fifth, represent the only two returning medalists on the balance beam, while Brinkman will look to improve on her fifth-place effort on the vault in 2019.
