Householder steers Fairmont Area over Minnehaha hockey, 4-3
MINNEAPOLIS — Mackenzie Householder totaled three points on two goals and an assist to help lead the Fairmont Area Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Minnehaha United Redhawks during nonconference hockey action Friday night in Minneapolis.
Householder scored the first goal of the matchup in unassisted style at the 14:12 mark of the opening period before converting a Hannah Goerndt assist at the 3:15 mark to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead.
Ava Wasserman used a Stella Berlin assist to bring Minnehaha within one, but Householder assisted Bella Larson for a power-play goal with one second left in the opening period to put Fairmont Area 3-1.
Wasserman scored her second goal of the game, this time off a double assist from Hannah Schommer and Lucy Lyngen with 6:24 left in the second period.
Brooklyn Meyer gave the Cardinals a necessary insurance goal — unassisted — with 15:44 left in the final segment.
Emma Barborak scored a power-play goal off a double assist from Wasserman and Schommer with 4:22 left, but Minnehaha United could not complete the late comeback.
Goaltender Hadley Artz made 25 saves to net the win for the Cardinals. Minnehaha United outshot Fairmont Area 28-25 in the matchup.
Fairmont Area (7-13-1) plays host to New Ulm in a 5 p.m. Big South Conference matchup on Tuesday.
