Mavericks win 6th consecutive basketball game

MADELIA — The Martin County West boys basketball team netted its sixth consecutive victory, but the Madelia Blackhawks made the visiting Mavericks work for every point, every rebound and every assist on Monday night.

Wyatt Geistfeld, who produced a double-double performance of 17 points and a game-best 12 rebounds, made four consecutive free throws during a 21-second span less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation to help the Mavericks fend off the Blackhawks, 67-62, in Madelia.

“Madelia threw some things at us that we weren’t expecting tonight,” MCW head coach Cliff Anderson said in reference to Madelia mentor Jeff VanHee implementing a zone-and-one defensive scheme.

After Karson Janssen drilled a right-corner 3-pointer to draw the Mavericks within 9-7, post player Kurt Logo and Ja’Sean Glover combined to trigger the Blackhawks’ ensuing 11-2 surge midway through the opening half.

“We struggled a bit early on, but we made some adjustments and the boys battled through the slow start,” said Cliff Anderson, who called timeout at the 8:52 juncture of the first segment to right the proverbial ship.

Geistfeld came out of the short recess by driving the wing and hitting a pull-up 12-footer to serve as the catalyst behind MCW’s countering 15-0 run during the next 5 minutes.

Mitch Weber nailed a left-corner 3 off Angel Reyes’ inbound pass, Zach Anderson tossed in two free throws and Derek Dunlop sank a top-of-the-key trifecta to whittle the Mavericks’ deficit to 20-19 and forced VanHee to call timeout at the 4:34 mark.

Tanner Sinn found a seam in the lane to the glass and converted Weber’s assist into the go-ahead basket 19 seconds out of the break before Weber banked a left-corner 3 off a Geistfeld assist for a 24-20 lead.

Glover, who topped all scorers with 26 points, ended Madelia’s offensive drought with a trey, but Sinn offset the damage by answering with a traditional 3-point play off an offensive carom.

Glover trimmed the Blackhawks’ deficit to two on a baseline leaner, but Geistfeld’s left-wing runner restored the Mavericks’ four-point edge going into halftime.

Zach Anderson then reeled off six of the Mavericks’ first eight points of the second half to double the visitors’ margin to eight, but Glover and Lugo combined to keep the Blackhawks within striking distance.

Reyes’ gliding lay-in off Weber’s hustling tap pass off a diving offensive board, Geistfeld’s low-post banker and Reyes’ conversion of a one-and-one situation widened MCW’s lead to 60-46 with 4:35 remaining, but Madelia reeled off a 7-0 run to keep the final outcome close.

Geistfeld converted a pivotal one-and-one at the 1:26 juncture before stepping back to the free throw line 21 seconds later to sink two more shots for a 64-55 lead.

Zach Anderson netted 15 points for the Mavericks, Sinn and Reyes contributed 10 points apiece to the balanced attack, while Janssen and Weber generated six points each off the bench.

Glover pulled down eight rebounds and doled out four assists to complement his 26-point effort for the Blackhawks, while Lugo finished with 12 points and eight boards. Ethan Arndt chipped in eight points, while Kadin Benzel added seven points and grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.
