No. 3 Red Bulls earn runner-up honors at TCU Invite

MONTGOMERY — The Class AA No. 3-ranked Martin County Red Bulls wrestling lineup produced seven individual champions on Saturday, but finished 11 points behind Class AAA No. 5-ranked New Prague during the Tri-City United Invitational in Montgomery.

No. 2-ranked 120-pounder Lucas Jagodzinske, No. 2-rated 126-pounder Jaxson Rohman, unranked 132-pounder Blake Jagodzinske, No. 3-ranked 138-pounder Connor Simmonds, No. 2-rated 152-pounder Payton Anderson, No. 3-ranked 160-pounder Miles Fitzgerald and No. 4-rated 170-pounder Nathan Simmonds each struck gold at their respective weights to pace the Red Bulls’ runner-up team total of 235.5.

New Prague tallied 246.5 points, host TCU netted third with 161, while Albert Lea finished fourth in the 10-team tournament with a 104.5.

Lucas Jagodzinske produced the Red Bulls’ first of four consecutive gold medals by generating three wins during the 120-pound bracket. Jagodzinske opened with a 16-1 technical fall over TCU’s Brant Lemieux, needed only 52 seconds to pin Plainview-Elgin-Millville’s Alex Hinrichs in the semifinals and posted a 9-0 major decision over Class AAA No. 2-ranked 113-pounder Colby Dunkel of New Prague in the finals.

Rohman followed suit for the Red Bulls by pinning Le Sueur-Henderson Area’s Sam Gupton in 1:42, assembled a textbook takedown-for-escape strategy in earning a 27-12 semifinal technical fall over TCU’s Cole Franek and produced a 13-4 major decision over Albert Lea’s Cameron Davis in the 126-pound championship match.

Blake Jagodzinske began his trek toward the top of the podium by pinning PEM’s Austin Michel in 3:10, rolled to a 15-3 major decision over New Prague’s Ryan Wagner in the semifinals and earned the slap of the canvas in 3:05 over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area’s Tucker Wills in the 132-pound finals.

Connor Simmonds produced the Red Bulls’ fourth consecutive crown by earning a fall in 1:26 over New Prague’s Alex Scheffler, chalked up a 6-0 semifinal win over TCU’s Caleb Whipps and edged Class AAA No. 4-ranked 138-pounder Nick Novak of New Prague in the championship match, 2-0.

Payton Anderson then outdueled three other state-ranked grapplers to win the 152-pound tournament title. Anderson pinned Adrian Area’s Axel Martinez in 1:28 before downing Class AAA No. 7-ranked 152-pounder Max Scheffler of New Prague in the semifinals, 9-2.

Anderson then shut out Class AA No. 9-ranked 145-pounder Cael Marx of PEM in the championship clash, 6-0. Marx gained the finals by edging Class AAA No. 3-ranked 152-pounder Caleb Talamantes of Albert Lea Area.

Fitzgerald pocketed gold at 160 by opening with a 10-5 decision over TCU’s Marco Reyes, coasted to a 16-1 technical fall over PEM’s Dereck Boyum in the semifinals and closed with a 14-6 major decision over New Prague’s Jay Skogerboe in the finals.

Nathan Simmonds wrapped up the Red Bulls’ individual winning ways by pinning his way to the 170-pound gold medal. Simmonds pressed Sibley East opponent Ben Quast’s shoulders to the mat in 3:49, earned the slap of the canvas in 1:45 over PEM’s Alex Rahman in the quarterfinals, needed 1:14 to dispose of New Prague’s Ethan Gregory in the semifinals and pinned LCWM’s Brenden Jones in the finals in 3:03.

Kain Sanders (113), Cale Steuber (145) and Jacob Rahn (195) all captured bronze medals for Martin County, Cooper Steuber posted a fourth-place finish at 106, while Max Olson (182) and Everardo Hernandez (220) added fifth-place showings.

The Red Bulls travel to St. Peter on Thursday night for a dual meet before competing in the Big South Conference Meet on Saturday in Worthington.
