REDWOOD FALLS — Alec Reutzel produced two goals and assisted Evan Carlson’s goal during Fairmont Area’s three-goal third-period comeback, but Redwood Valley held on for a 6-5 Big South Conference hockey victory Saturday in Redwood Falls.

Trailing 4-2, Reutzel delivered a pass to Carlson, who found the Redwood Valley webbing with his shot to trim the visiting Cardinals’ deficit to one 4:49 into the third segment.

Reutzel then produced the equalizer off an even-strength unassisted goal to knot the game at 4-all just six minutes into the final period of regulation.

Caleb Nelson and Mason Clark, however, answered for Redwood Valley by netting back-to-back goals 10:22 and 12:51 into the third to restore a two-goal lead at 6-4. Nelson scored the tiebreaking goal off a Brody Plass pass during a power play, while Mason Clark netted the eventual game-winner off an assist from Andrew Cotner.

Reutzel then converted Thomas Claeys’ second assist of the game into a goal with just 47 seconds remaining in regulation to inch Fairmont Area within one at 6-5.

Claeys accounted for the opening period’s only point by tallying an unassisted goal 5:52 into the league contest.

Carter Iwan, Jayson Peyerl, Plass and Cotner, however, reeled off four consecutive goals within the first 5:29 of the second period to build a 4-1 lead for Redwood Valley.

Kaiden Musser then converted a double-assist from Claeys and Dominic Hegdal into a goal to trim Fairmont Area’s deficit to 4-2 with 6:26 remaining in the middle segment.

Goaltender Carsen Musser recorded a game-best 42 saves for Fairmont Area, while Redwood Valley netminder Kia Jacobson notched 24 stops to earn the win.

Fairmont Area (2-10) plays host to Luverne at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont in another Big South Conference game.
