Maverick reserves prove clutch in 31-point hoops victory

SHERBURN — Kari Matejka, Rubi Reyes, Gabby Lange, Emily Anderson and Katie Lange came off Martin County West’s bench Thursday night to help the Maverick hoopsters shake off the holiday rust.

Matejka scorched the Sherburn nylon cords for a game-best 22 points on 9-for-15 sharpshooting — including 4 of 6 from 3-point distance, and pocketed a game-high four steals to pace Martin County West’s 63-32 triumph over the Edgerton Dutchmen.

Matejka and her fellow valuable reserves combined for 35 points — with Reyes supplying eight, 16 rebounds — with Anderson and the Langes grabbing four apiece, four steals and four assists during the non-league rout.

“It definitely looked like our first game after the Christmas break,” said MCW mentor Rodger Taylor, whose lineup’s last game was a 42-24 win over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Dec. 20. “Kari gave us some big minutes in the first half and then continued in the second half where she left off.”

Only 4 minutes after singing the national anthem, Liz Fisher delivered four of her 12 points to help trigger the Mavericks’ 11-1 surge to tip off the game.

Power forward Reece Wassink, who neared a double-double by scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds, cashed in one of Gabrielle Buckridge’s three assists for a low-post basket to end Edgerton’s 3-minute scoring drought with 12:30 left in the first half.

Matejka, however erupted for 11 of the Mavericks’ ensuing 17 points to help stake the hometown lineup to a 28-15 halftime lead.

Wassink, however, served as Edgerton’s catalyst out of the gate to open the second half on a 7-0 run. Wassink delivered a kickout pass from the low post to Buckridge for a 15-footer before the 5-foot-10 sophomore post player banked home Addison Fleischman’s lob to the paint. Fleischman then knocked down Edgerton’s only 3-pointer of the night to trim MCW’s margin to 28-22 at the 15-minute juncture.

Enter Matejka.

The Maverick freshman guard swooshed a left-corner 3-pointer before hitting a putback off her own miss to ignite a 12-0 run to create breathing room on the scoreboard.

Gabby Lange banked home back-to-back low-post baskets off assists from Fisher before Gabby Lange spotted Emily Dunlop for a bucket in the paint. Katie Lange sank a solo free throw to make it 40-22 with 11 minutes to go.

Wassink halted MCW’s consecutive-points run with a low-post basket before Matejka’s fourth and final 3 engineered an ensuing 9-0 home team surge to extend the lead to 25.

Matejka spotted Marissa Whitehead for a cutter in traffic before Matejka and Dunlop fed Sami Meyer for back-to-back 2-pointers for a 49-24 advantage with 8 minutes remaining.

Reyes closed the final minutes of regulation by pouring in eight of the Mavericks’ final 10 points, including a rare 4-point play — a 3-pointer plus an ‘and-1’ with 1:41 to go.

Dunlop finished with six points, nine rebounds and three steals for MCW, while Meyer supplied six points and eight rebounds.

Martin County West (4-4) plays host to Buffalo Lake-Hector at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in Sherburn. Edgerton (0-7) hosts Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda tonight.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 73, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 39 — Madison Mathiowetz produced 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists to power the Class 1A, No. 8-ranked Knights to a 34-point nonconference victory over the Jaguars on Thursday night in Sleepy Eye.

No individual or team statistics were provided by the Jaguars.

The Jaguars (6-5) play host to Alden-Conger/ Glenville-Emmons on Tuesday night in Truman, while Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (10-1) plays host to Buffalo Lake-Hector tonight.
