Martin Co. West hoopsters dunk Edgerton

SHERBURN — Martin County West pocketed 21 steals to take a 67-55 win over Edgerton in Sherburn on Thursday night.

The Flying Dutchmen stormed out to an early 12-4 lead, but with only one sub on the bench, their early energy fell flat late in the first half.

The Mavericks tied the game at 16 with 8:43 left in the opening half, then stormed ahead for a 17-point halftime lead.

Derek Dunlop helped put the Mavericks ahead when he turned a steal into a pass-ahead assist to Wyatt Geistfeld. Geistfeld was fouled mid layup and converted the traditional 3-point play.

Zach Anderson then scored nine consecutive points. Anderson stole a pass, then put in a putback shot after grabbing an offensive board before Angel Reyes turned a steal into an assist on an Anderson breakaway dunk. Anderson’s dunk got the Sherburn gym rocking and helped continue the late first-half momentum shift.

Anderson then hit a left-corner 3 off another Reyes assist, this time on an inbound pass, before making another putback shot for one of his 10 rebounds and two of his game-leading 21 points. After Anderson’s run, the Mavericks lead 30-23.

Reyes then turned one of his game high six steals into a layup before Mitch Weber converted an Anderson assist for a layup.

Geistfeld then turned a steal into an assist for an Anderson layup to put the Mavericks ahead 36-23.

Karson Janssen hit one of his four treys, Dunlop hit a layup off an underneath assist from Reyes, Janssen assisted Tanner Sinn for two and Dunlop used a Geistfeld assist to send MCW into the half up 45-28.

MCW head coach Cliff Anderson said the Mavericks didn’t play their best game, but showed just enough.

“We looked kind of sluggish tonight, but a win is a win,” Anderson said. “We showed some good spurts and we showed some stuff that we need to improve on. If you’re not shooting the ball well, you can’t just settle for 3s and we settled for 3s. Coming off Christmas break, I’m happy we got the win, but we need to play better.”

The Maverick offense slowed in the second half, scoring only 22 points, but maintained at least a 12-point lead the entire way.

Zach Anderson led the Mavericks with a double-double performance of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three steals.

Geistfeld scored 14 points, and put up great all-around numbers of seven assists, five steals and three rebounds. Reyes totalled 10 points, six assists and six steals, while Sinn brought down eight boards.

Janssen scored 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

Gabe Gilbertson led the Flying Dutchmen with 18 points, while grabbing five rebounds and pocketing three steals.

Keegan Fey notched 14 points, while Mason Gilbertson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, with nine coming in the second half.

The win marks the Mavericks’ fifth consecutive victory. Cliff Anderson said though starting the new year with a win is nice, the Mavericks have things to work on.

“You always want to win the ballgame and every game is important,” Anderson said. “Not playing our best and still getting the win is a good sign, but we need to play better for sure.”

MCW (8-1) goes to Madelia for a 7:15 p.m. matchup Monday. Edgerton (0-7) travels to Lamberton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to face Red Rock Central.
