Fairmont girls basketball edges New Ulm, 56-54

NEW ULM — Power forward Bryn Miller scorched the New Ulm gymnasium’s nets on 9-for-11 field-goal shooting to produce a game-best 19 points to help the Fairmont Cardinals squeeze by the New Ulm Eagles, 56-54, during Big South Conference basketball action Thursday night.

The visiting Cardinals built a 30-19 halftime lead before fending off the Eagles’ late comeback bid.

Madysen Allen contributed 11 points and three steals to Fairmont’s winning ways, while teammate Cadence Becker supplied seven points and three steals.

Brittney Mosloski scored seven points for the Cardinals, Faith Olson drilled a pair of 3-pointers for six points, while Emma Gudahl distributed three assists.

Fairmont made 20 of 35 field goals overall for 57 percent, including 3 of 9 behind the 3-point arc, to complement a 13-for-18 performance at the free throw line for 72 percent.

Fairmont (2-2) travels to Sherburn on Saturday to face Martin County West in a 4 p.m. nonconference varsity tipoff.

Emily Frank poured in a game-best 16 points to power Fairmont to a 36-24 triumph over New Ulm during B-squad action Thursday night in New Ulm.

Martin County West 52, Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 42 — The Mavericks hit 20 of 51 field goals to lead to a Valley Conference girls basketball win over the Knights on Thursday night in Sherburn.

Marissa Whitehead led the Mavericks by scoring 14 points to complement her four rebounds, while teammate Emily Dunlop totalled a double-double performance with 10 points and 11 boards.

Gabby Lange neared double-double territory by collecting six points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks, while teammate Sami Meyer generated nine points, garnered five rebounds and pocketed four steals.

MCW made 39 percent of its shots from the field, while adding 9 of 16 at the free throw line.

The Mavericks (1-3) play host to Fairmont at 4 p.m. Saturday in Sherburn.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 51, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 50 — The Jaguars survived a final-shot attempt from the Bulldogs to take a one-point Valley Conference win Thursday night in Janesville.

Eden Studer’s double-double performance of 14 points and 15 rebounds led the Jaguars, while teammate Michaelah Petrowiak totalled 12 points.

Jayme Balcom scored nine points to complement distributing six assists for the Jaguars, while teammate Abby Calkins grabbed 10 boards.

The Jaguars shot 20 of 59 from the field, for 34 percent, and made nine of 29 free throws.

The Jaguars (4-2, 1-1) play host to Jackson County Central tonight in Truman.

Estherville-Lincoln Central 45, North Union 32 — The Midgettes outscored the Warriors 27-7 in the second half to take a nonconference win Thursday night in Estherville, Iowa.

Chloe Lofstrom led the Warriors with 16 points and seven rebounds. Lily Henderson and May Laverty each put up four points, while Hope Steinberger grabbed four rebounds. Cassie Beadle and Steinberger each had three steals.

Jaydan Nitchals led the Midgettes with 16 points, while Jordyn Stokes and Amara Heinrichs each had nine.

The Warriors hit 11 of 26 shots from the field, including 1 of 7 from 3, and sank 9 of 15 free throws.

North Union (2-2) plays host to West Hancock tonight at 6:15 p.m. in Armstrong.

Boys Basketball

Pipestone Area 66, Martin County West 40 — The Arrows ended the Mavericks undefeated start in nonconference boys basketball action Thursday in Pipestone.

Wyatt Geistfeld led the Mavericks with 14 points, while Tanner Sinn totalled eight points.

Angel Reyes and Derek Dunlop each contributed seven points to the Mavericks’ effort.

JT Tinklenberg led the Arrows with 20 points and Dawson Kellen totalled 12.

The Mavericks hit 16 of 21 free throws, while the Arrows made 21 of 29 from the charity stripe.

MCW (3-1) plays host to Fairmont at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Trimont.

Estherville-Lincoln Central 69, North Union 31 — The Midgets held the Warriors under 10 points in all four quarters to take a nonconference win Thurdsay in Estherville.

Robert Ortman and Brendan Anderson each had eight points to lead the Warriors, while Braden Pierce had a team-high five rebounds.

Ortman, Noah Morphew and Anderson each had four.

Matt Christensen led the Midgets with 16 points, while Izaak Sander had 11 and Jacob Jensen and Adrian Vaughn each had 10.

The Warriors made 13 of 35 shots for 37 percent, and made five of nine free throws.

North Union (1-3) plays host to West Hancock at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
