12U girls hockey team claims 2nd at own tournament

FAIRMONT — The Wyffels Hybrids 12U girls hockey team of Fairmont compiled a 3-1 record en route to capturing runner-up honors during last weekend’s Fairmont Invitational.

Brooklyn Murphy generated three goals and one assist, while teammates Maia Goerndt, Madison Sokoloski and Abi Sundeen each delivered hat tricks to power Fairmont’s 14-6 opening route over Okoboji last Friday at Martin County Arena.

Jadyn Musser contributed one goal and one helper to Wyffels’ winning ways, Keara Flanagan doled out four assists and Ilana Moeller added one goal.

Lily Truesdell made 18 saves to net the win for Fairmont, which tallied 26 shots on goal.

Goerndt then erupted for four goals to engineer Wyffels’ 5-2 second-round victory over Omaha on Saturday.

Sundeen chipped in one goal, Murphy distributed an assist and Moeller turned away 27 shots on goal to net the win. Fairmont made 18 shots on goal.

Moeller posted a shutout between the pipes and Musser produced a hat trick to steer Fairmont to a 4-0 third-round victory over Windom on Saturday.

Goerndt supplied one goal, Flanagan doled out two assists, while Sundeen and Sokoloski each dished out one helper. Wyffels had 39 shots on goal.

Omaha bounced back to net a 4-1 win over Fairmont during Sunday’s final round of ice action.

Murphy tallied an unassisted goal, while Moeller chalked up 21 saves between the pipes for Wyffels.

The Wyffels Hybrids 12U girls hockey team plays host to Lakes Area at 3 p.m. Saturday at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
