FAIRMONT — Seven Fairmont Area Cardinal soccer players merited selection to this fall’s Big South Conference all-league teams.

Senior striker Joni Becker and senior defender McKayla Chambers garnered first-team all-Big South accolades for the Fairmont Area girls lineup, while senior midfielder Lexi Kaufman and sophomore goalkeeper Cadence Becker collected honorable mention status.

Senior netminder Tyson Geerdes paced the Fairmont Area boys program by being named to the all-conference first team, while senior striker Kaleb Hoye and junior forward Juan Santana Sanz collected honorable mention.

Geerdes generated an .835 goals against average en route to compiling six shutouts on the season to help power the Cardinals boys program to a 9-9-1 overall record, including a pair of victories in the Section 2A playoffs.

Hoye tallied eight goals and distributed two assists for Fairmont Area, while Santana Sanz supplied six goals and three helpers on the campaign.

In girls action, Joni Becker exited her four-year varsity prep soccer career as the Cardinals’ all-time leading career scorer. Becker produced a team-best 18 goals this fall to complement two assists in helping engineer Fairmont Area’s second consecutive appearance in the Section 2A championship game.

Chambers, a hard-working defender, generated one goal during her final prep soccer season, while denying opposing attackers’ numerous shots on goal. Chambers played a key role in the Cardinals compiling a 14-3-1 overall record in 2019.

Kaufman, the Cardinals’ MVP in 2017 and 2018, amassed 14 points on the strength of seven goals and seven assists this season, while Cadence Becker registered an .830 goals against average between the pipes. The second-year varsity keeper netted nine shutouts on the season.
