Fairmont tennis opens 3A action

FAIRMONT — The No. 3-seeded Fairmont girls tennis team plays No. 6-seeded Maple River at 1 p.m. today at the Owatonna Indoor Courts in a Section 3A Team Meet quarterfinal dual meet.

7th-grade grid team wins pair

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinal seventh-grade football team posted a pair of victories last week.

Fairmont coasted to a 28-0 shutout over Mankato East last Monday before rolling to a 32-14 triumph over New Ulm on Thursday.

Hank Artz rushed for 99 yards and one touchdown, converted a 2-point run and passed for 51 yards and two more scores against New Ulm.

Nolan Schultze caught a 21-yard TD pass from Artz, while Elijah Johnson garnered a 30-yard scoring strike to complement an 85-yard kickoff return for six more points.

Caleb Chambers capped the Cardinals’ scoring with an 8-yard TD run against New Ulm.

Johnson scooped up a fumble forced by Trevor Maakestad to help highlight Fairmont’s defense.

Artz erupted for 198 rushing yards and three TDs to help power the Cardinals past Mankato East.

Johnson contributed Fairmont’s fourth TD on the ground, Artz tossed a 2-point pass to Schultze, while Schultze connected on a 2-point conversion throw to Harmon Schrunk.

Schrunk also recovered a fumble created by Maakestad, while teammates Tyler Kurt and Eric Determan pocketed interceptions.

Fairmont plays host to Jackson County Central at 4:30 p.m. today at Mahoney Field.
