Fairmont girls run to 2nd; boys meet weathered out

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Laura Thompson and Macy Hanson placed second and third overall to guide the Fairmont Cardinal girls cross country team to second place at the St. James Invitational on Tuesday at the Mountain Lake Golf Course.

The Class A No. 4-ranked Thompson collected runner-up individual accolades with a time of 19:18.4 in the 5K race behind Luverne’s No. 5-ranked Tenley Nelson, who captured top honors in 19:06.9.

Hanson, a seventh-grade standout, took third place overall in 20:11.7.

The Cardinals then took four consecutive spots from 12th to 15th place overall.

Tabitha Thatcher placed 12th with a time of 21:50.2, then Emma Gudahl took 13th at 22:00.1. Hannah Neusch was right behind Emma Gudahl with her time of 22:00.2 for 14th and Carys Gudahl took 15th in the 62-runner race at 22:14.4.

Sara Sundblad was the next Fairmont finisher with a time of 23:37.3, good for 24th, followed by Eleanor Hamlet (24:05.2) in 29th.

Becca Lunn took 39th with a time of 26:27.1, then Bethany Thatcher placed 43rd in 26:43.4. Justine Eisenmenger (27:23.3) finished 45th and Emily Kerekes (29:28.9) took 56th.

The Cardinals finished second with 41 points behind Luverne’s total of 33.

Four Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Jayhawks competed in the invite.

Ella Bergeman finished 34th overall with a time of 25:23, then Samantha Moeller took 41st at 26:37.5.

Sarah Jelokov (38:13.2) and Kathryn Jelokov (39:03.2) took 61st and 62nd, respectively.

The boys portion of the event was called off halfway through because of lightning.

Fairmont hosts the I-90 Invitational at Cedar Creek Park in Fairmont at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.
