No. 6 BEA serves sweep to USC

BLUE EARTH — The No. 6-ranked Bucs continued their winning ways on senior night.

Blue Earth Area beat the United South Central Rebels 7-0 in nonconference tennis action Monday at Schroeder courts in Blue Earth.

None of the BEA netters needed a third set to earn a match win.

The Bucs’ first doubles tandem of McKenna Dutton and Britt Howard where the first BEA players to earn a team point, needing less than an hour after finishing warm ups to gain a 6-1, 6-1 win over Aly Swanson and Lauren Zebro.

After a 10-minute segment with no Bucs players finishing their matches, an avalanche of wins took the meet for BEA.

Second singles netter and celebrated senior Macie Stevermer earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Delaney Weber to start the rush of Buc points.

One minute later, third singles player Arika Howard continued her undefeated season when she beat Trinity Seedorf 6-0, 6-3. Seedorf sent Howard running around the baseline, but Howard was able to loft shot after shot before forcing Seedorf to hit a long forehand for the win.

Only seconds went by before the BEA second doubles crew of Cali Beyer and Lyndsey Borris walked off the court with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Olivia Schwartz and Kelsie Chapman.

Beyer and Borris hurried over to see if they had earned the win before Arika Howard finished her match, only to find out they were less than a minute too late.

With the match clinched at a 4-0 BEA lead, first singles netter Te’a Armstrong took an extra two minutes before finishing her match with Daylyn Huper with a 6-0, 6-1 win.

BEA fourth singles player Marissa Benz gave the Bucs the singles sweep when she took a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Rebels’ Satah Mantor.

“I think we really focused and played well,” Said BEA head coach Konny Wolff. “I know a lot of them probably have their minds on the Big South Championship tomorrow, but I think we focused and did well today.”

The final BEA netters on the court were the third singles tandem of Addison Armstrong and Kylie Rosenau, after beginning play on the court Dutton and Britt Howard vacated with their expedient victory.

Addison Armstrong and Rosenau came back from a 3-0 first-set deficit against Maya Zebro and Elizabeth Romano to take a 6-4 win.

Zebro and Romano started the second set strong as well, taking the first game before Armstrong and Rosenau tied the set at 1.

The pairs went on to tie at 2, 3 and 4 with each side earning a game by breaking their opponents serve.

Steller net play kept the USC third netters in the match as both Zebro and Romano hit winner volleys from the net, then with Armstrong and Rosenau ahead 4-3, the game went to deuce four times before the USC crew took consecutive points to tie the set.

Rosenau and Arstrong broke the USC serve once again, then Armstrong served the pair to a 40-30 lead before a Rebel shot sailed out of bounds to complete the BEA win.

With the victory, No. 6-ranked BEA moves its season record to 16-1 and goes on to face St. James Area in the Big South Conference championship match at 4:30 p.m. today in St. James, before playing at Belle Plaine at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Wolff said the team will need its sleep to play well today.

“Hopefully they’ll get a lot of rest,” Wolff said. “We have a few that are battling some sickness, colds, sore throats and stuff. Hopefully they get some sleep, come out focused and play the way we can play.”
