Fairmont nets 5-2 tennis win over Maple River

MAPLETON — Four consecutive victories during a five-day span.

The Fairmont Cardinals earned that unique achievement by posting a 5-2 nonconference girls tennis victory over the Maple River Eagles on Friday night in Mapleton.

Fairmont netted shutout victories over Pipestone and River Valley on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, before edging St. Peter by a 4-3 decision on Thursday.

Briana Joseph, Maggy Totzke and Lauren Green each produced back-to-back 6-0 set wins at Nos. 2-4 singles, respectively, to help pace the Cardinals’ winning ways on the road.

Joseph dispatched Mariah Lippert at the No. 2 spot in the singles bracket, Maggy Totzke zipped Leah Proehl at the No. 3 position in the lineup, while Lauren Green coasted by Kayla Berg at the No. 4 spot.

Anika Haugen and Libby Totzke combined court skills at third doubles to capture a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Isabella Nelson and Kelsey Jaeger for Fairmont, while Ellie Hernes and Emily Hagen battled back to outlast Sophie Christian and Ella Sohre in a three-set second doubles clash, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Perennial individual state qualifier Vanessa Barkosky generated Maple River’s lone singles point by outdueling Claire Nemmers at the No. 1 position in a pair of hard-hitting sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Abby Bruegger and Olivia Pfeffer netted the Eagles’ lone doubles point by serving a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis at the No. 1 spot in the bracket.

Fairmont (13-7) plays host to United South Central at 10 a.m. today at the Cardinal Courts in Fairmont in yet another rescheduled dual meet.
