Cardinals tennis team downs Arrows, 7-0

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals breezed by the Pipestone Arrows during a rare 90-degree autumn afternoon Monday during Big South Conference tennis action at the Cardinal Courts.

The third doubles tandem of Libby Totzke and Anika Haugen combined court skills to swing the early momentum in the Cardinals’ direction before singles netters Briana Joseph, Lauren Green and Maggy Totzke reeled off back-to-back-to-back singles shutouts during an 11-minute span to seal the dual meet’s final outcome.

Claire Nemmers, along with the doubles teams of Ellie Hernes and Emily Hagen, and Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis, closed out Fairmont’s 7-0 sweep over Pipestone less than 33 minutes later.

“Our singles play was incredible today with Briana, Maggy and Lauren all winning in straight sets,” said Fairmont head coach Eric Johnson. “We know we’ve been really close to breaking through with (team) wins against some tough competition lately. That’s really helped us become more disciplined.”

Libby Totzke and Anika Haugen clicked serve after serve and lob after lob to coast to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Emma Czech and Zoe Velde at the No. 3 spot in the doubles bracket to generate the Cardinals’ first team tally.

Joseph, Lauren Green and Maggy Totzke then methodically steamrolled to back-to-back 6-0 set victories at second, fourth and third singles, respectively, to clinch Fairmont’s team triumph. Joseph downed Mataya Douty, Totzke defeated Olivia Lapthorn and Green netted her 12-game decision over Hannah Minet.

Nemmers then displayed her resiliency by rallying from a 3-2 first-set deficit to hard-hitting Paige Ahrendt at first singles to claim a 6-3 victory.

Nemmers chipped and sliced her way to four straight game wins before closing out the second set with a 6-1 decision to net Fairmont’s fifth team tally.

“Claire really showed how much she’s grown since the last time she played her (Ahrendt) last fall,” said Johnson. “Claire’s transition from defense to offense was solid today.”

Hernes and Hagen outslugged Emma Stahl and Toryn Woelber in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-5, after trailing 5-3. Hagen’s serving and Hernes’ quick-reflex play near the net fueled the comeback and their ensuing 6-2 second-set win.

After losing the opening set 7-5 to MacKenzie Manderscheid and Skylar Mendro, Senf and Davis notched a 6-3 second-set win. The Fairmont No. 1 doubles tandem then captured a supertiebreaker — 10-8 — in place of a full third set to ice the sweep.

“Bergen and Lauren had a hard time starting out, but didn’t quit and figured out how to right the ship,” said Johnson.

Fairmont (10-7) hosts River Valley at 4:30 p.m. today at the Cardinal Courts, while Pipestone plays host to Redwood Valley.
