Cardinals ground Bluejays; No. 6 Bucs declaw Wildcats

WASECA — Fairmont pulled of a rare feat by beating the Waseca Bluejays 5-2 in Big South Conference girls tennis action Tuesday in Waseca.

Fairmont took three singles wins and two doubles wins, with all three doubles matches going to a decisive third set, to engineer its team triumph.

Briana Joseph needed only 15 games to take a 6-2, 6-1 win over CeCe Huttemier at second singles, while Maggy Totzke needed only the minimum 12 to shut out Tanika Johnson at third singles.

Lauren Green earned Fairmont’s final singles point with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) win over Sarah Robbins at the No. 4 position.

Fairmont’s first doubles tandem of Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis overcame a second-set loss to beat Hannah Potter and Morgan Bruhn 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and the Cardinals’ second doubles team of Ellie Hernes and Emily Hagen came back to beat Emily Farley and Nicola DeJager, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Waseca’s third doubles team of Ava Storjohann and Grace Lapides earned a three-set victory over Libby Totzke and Shannon Green, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Waseca first singles player Taylor Pfeifer collected a team point for the Bluejays when Claire Nemmers defaulted late in the first set.

Fairmont (8-4) travels to New Ulm on Thursday.

Blue Earth Area 7, River Valley 0 — The Class A, No. 6-ranked Bucs engineered their shutout victory over the Wildcats in straight-set style at all seven positions in the lineup during Tuesday’s nonconference dual meet.

Te’a Armstrong took down River Valley’s Brooklyn Moldan 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, while Macie Stevermer defeated Kaydince Thomas 6-0, 6-0 at second singles.

BEA’s Arika Howard needed only 12 games to beat Lexanna Lazatin 6-0, 6-0 at third singles and Bucs’ fourth singles netter Marissa Benz won by the same margin over Kierra Lafferty, 6-0, 6-0.

The Bucs’ No. 1 doubles team of McKenna Dutton and Britt Howard needed only 14 games to beat Denis Demirturk and Meghan Stevens 6-1, 6-1.

The Bucs’ Cali Beyer and Lyndsey Borris took 12 games to shut out Sydne Wahl and Erika Lanzano 6-0, 6-0 and Addison Armstrong and Kiley Rosenau combined for a third-doubles shutout over Presley Dockter and Jasmyne Windschitl 6-0, 6-0.

Blue Earth Area (10-0) plays host to Waseca at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
