Cardinals flatten Trojans in BSC soccer clash, 10-0

FAIRMONT — Seven consecutive victories.

Fairmont Area striker Joni Becker erupted for a game-best four goals, Ellie Schultze distributed a game-high three assists and Emma Schultze tallied two goals to power a 10-0 Big South Conference soccer victory over the Worthington Trojans on Tuesday.

Emma Schultze and Sami Lenort needed only 2:10 to combine skills to record the first goal of the league clash at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

Lenort worked the left end line before lofting a floater to Emma Schultze, who headed the ball past Trojans netminder Chantel Peralta’s diving reach to trigger an avalanche of goals en route to the Cardinals’ seventh win out of eight games this fall.

Peralta then denied nine straight Fairmont Area shots on goal to keep the hometown lineup off of the scoreboard for a 12 1/2-minute span. Peralta finished with a game-best 19 stops.

Joni Becker, however, continued her torrid scoring ways by reeling off back-to-back goals during a 7-minute stretch to widen the Cardinals’ gap to 3-0.

Becker tapped home a rebound off Savanah Baker’s initial shot inside the left post from the doorstep to double the gap to 2-0 at the 15:29 mark.

Becker then utilized her strong left foot to drill a rising liner into the top right shelf off Ellie Schultze’s perfect 15-yard lead chip with 8:49 remaining in the opening segment.

Rayah Quiring and the Schultze sisters — Ellie and Emma — then combined for two more Fairmont Area goals within a 33-second span with time winding down in the first half. Ellie Schultze filtered a pass to Quiring for a right-to-left crossing shot to find twine at the 1:51 juncture. Emma Schultze then rebounded Quiring’s initial shot that Peralta blocked and managed to bump the ball into the net before colliding with the Trojans’ keeper.

“She (Peralta) is a gritty keeper. She went out after the scrum in front of the net with 1:18 left in the first half, but she came back for the second half,” said Fairmont Area head coach Matt Nielsen.

A rejuvenated Peralta, however, could not halt Maddie Maakestad’s putback goal off an Ellie Schultze ricochet off the crossbar at the 25:51 juncture of the second half.

Joni Becker then grouped two more goals in a span of 34 seconds to create an 8-0 advantage for the Cardinals. Cadence Becker recorded a rare assist for a keeper by launching her kick past midfield, where Joni Becker settled it and drove the distance for a low blast off the goalie and into the net at the 13:24 mark.

Joni Becker then cashed in Bailey Martinson’s threaded pass through traffic moments later and nailed a left-to-right laser into the right corner of the cage.

Mackenzie Householder buried a rebound off a Lexi Kaufman initial shot with 8:34 remaining in regulation before Kaufman capped the double-figure offensive outpouring with an unassisted goal on the doorstep at 4:59.

Cadence Becker stopped three shots to net the shutout for the Cardinals. Peralta made a game-best 19 saves, while backup goalie Marilyn Orellama chipped in six stops.
