Fairmont spikers collect 1st win of season

SLEEPY EYE — The Fairmont Cardinals volleyball lineup captured its first victory of the season en route to netting an overall 1-2 record at Saturday’s Sleepy Eye Invitational.

Natalie Tonne drilled six kills and recorded three blocks, while Cambrie Anderson made nine digs and went 7-for-8 serving to help power Fairmont to a 25-17, 25-22 win over Madelia.

Jen Moeller went 17 of 18 serving and made seven digs in the Cardinals’ winning effort, while Sophie Johnson supplied seven digs and went 4-for-4 at the line.

Sabrina Segar distributed seven set assists and went 6 of 6 serving for Fairmont, Andrea Westcott doled out three set assists, while Bryn Miller smacked three kills.

Despite Cassidy Schultz producing four kills and eight digs to complement 5-for-5 serving, the Cardinals dropped a 25-19, 25-16 decision to Buffalo Lake-Hector.

Segar went 8-for-8 serving with seven set assists and seven digs, Anderson generated seven digs to go with 8-for-8 serving, Westcott dished out six set assists, while Johnson was perfect on six serves and made four digs against BLH.

Kylee Harder and Tonne supplied three kills each to Fairmont’s frontline performance.

Host Sleepy Eye downed Fairmont in tournament action, 25-17, 25-17.

Anderson went 7 of 7 at the service line and made 12 digs for the Cardinals, while Madysen Allen and Moeller chipped in seven and six digs, respectively.

Tonne and Miller smacked three kills apiece, with Tonne adding three blocks to the frontline effort.

Westcott doled out five set assists, while Segar, Harder and Moeller each were perfect in delivering six, six and five serves, respectively.

Fairmont (1-6) travels to New Richland tonight.

Luverne Invite

The Blue Earth Area Bucs went 0-3 during the Luverne Invitational on Saturday.

Adrian posted a 25-11, 25-11 first-round victory over Blue Earth Area, Iowa powerhouse West Lyon rolled to a 25-1, 25-9 second-round win over the Bucs, while Edgerton edged BEA in third-round play, 25-15, 25-22.

Liz Beeler distributed eight set assists and went 4-for-4 serving for BEA against Adrian, while Brita Hougen tallied three points and two aces behind 5-for-5 serving to go with four digs and three kills.

Heidi Herrmann smacked four kills for the Bucs, Eloise Blair delivered three kills and 12 digs, while Maci Frommie added three kills in opening-round play.

Blair dug up seven West Lyon spikes during second-round action, Hougen tallied three kills, while Beeler doled out three set assists for BEA.

Gabby Haaland tallied two kills and went 11-for-12 serving for eight points, including two aces, to pace the Bucs against Edgerton.

Hougen collected three digs, two kills and went 7-for-7 serving, while Beeler dished out nine set assists and went 6 of 6 serving.

Frommie tallied three kills, Herrmann chipped in two spike-winners, Blair made 10 digs, while Alicia Machacek added two ace blocks.

Blue Earth Area (0-7, 0-3 Big South) plays host to Martin County West tonight.

Algona Invite

The North Union Warriors compiled an 0-3 record at Saturday’s Algona Invitational.

Host Algona defeated North Union, 21-17, 21-7; Webster City posted a 21-8, 21-11 decision over the Warriors; Spirit Lake rolled to a 21-10, 21-5 triumph over North Union, while Sioux Center closed with a 21-8, 21-16 win over the Warriors.

North Union (0-6) plays host to West Hancock on Tuesday night in Armstrong.
