Cardinals tennis shuts out Trojans; No. 6 BEA bests Luverne

WORTHINGTON — Only one match needed a third set in the Fairmont Cardinals’ decisive 7-0 Big South Conference girls tennis victory over the Worthington Trojans on Tuesday.

Claire Nemmers eased her way to a 6-1, 6-3 win against Kessey Aljets at the first singles spot, while Briana Joseph shut down Ivy Jenson, 6-3, 6-1, at second singles.

Lauren Green needed only the minimum to beat Marah Darling, 6-0, 6-0, in the third singles position and Bergen Senf took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Taya Oberloh to round out the singles bracket.

Fairmont’s doubles tandem of Lauren Davis and Maggy Totzke dominated in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Madison Johnson and Maggie Putnam at first singles. It was Totzke’s first match back after missing multiple meets because of injury.

The Cardinals’ second doubles combination of Shannon Green and Ellie Hernes came back after a tough first-set loss to beat Cynthia Souksavath and Jasmine Riley, 5-7, 6-3, (10-8), while Libby Totzke and Emily Hagen completed Fairmont’s sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kya Nickel and Neveah Schreiber at third doubles.

Fairmont (6-2) plays host to Blue Earth Area at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, while Worthington takes on Redwood Valley on the road.

Blue Earth Area 6, Luverne 1 — The Class A No. 6-ranked Bucs swept the doubles bracket to help lead to a 6-1 Big South Conference girls tennis win over the Cardinals at the Schroeder Courts on Tuesday.

The Bucs doubles team of McKenna Dutton and Britt Howard earned BEA a point when they beat Brynn Thier and Mela Jarchow, 6-4, 6-0, then BEA’s Cali Beyer and Lyndsey Borris needed a second-set tiebreaker to beat Lauren Ver Steeg and Solveig Tofteland 6-0, 7-6 (7-4).

BEA’s third doubles tandem of Addison Armstrong and Kiley Rosenau defeated Jacey Smith and Olivia Wieneke with back-to-back 6-3 scores.

In the singles bracket, Te’a Armstrong eased past Roz Oye, 6-1, 6-0, while Macie Stevermer earned the Bucs another point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Elise Jarchow at the No. 2 spot.

Arika Howard took a point for the Bucs at third singles when she beat Ainslie Robinson 6-0, 6-3.

Liz Kelm earned the Cardinals’ lone point by outlasting Marissa Benz, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at fourth singles.

Blue Earth Area (7-0) travels to Fairmont on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. Big South Conference dual meet at the Cardinal Courts.
