Fairmont Area kicks past New Ulm, 3-1

NEW ULM — Fairmont Area combined a diversified offensive attack with a smothering defensive performance to collect its first victory of the girls soccer campaign Monday night.

Netkeeper Cadence Becker recorded 10 saves, while Emma Schultze, Joni Becker and Lexi Kaufman each produced one goal apiece to engineer the Cardinals’ 3-1 Big South Conference triumph over the New Ulm Eagles.

Emma Schultze opened the league clash by converting Rayah Quiring’s assist into a net-finding floater over Eagles netminder Kendra Nesvold’s reach from 25 yards out for a 1-0 Cardinals’ lead in the opening segment.

Bryn Nesvold delivered the offensive equalizer via an unassisted goal to knot the score at 1-1 going into the lockerroom at halftime.

Joni Becker, however, snapped the deadlock for good by taking a pass from Mackenzie Householder and guiding it home from 12 yards out via a half-volley kick during the second half.

Kaufman then provided an insurance goal for Fairmont Area by taking a crossing pass from Sami Lenort and converting it into a goal from 6 yards out along the right side.

Cadence Becker stopped 10 of the Eagles’ 11 shots on goal, while New Ulm’s Kendra Nesvold turned away 19 of Fairmont Area’s game-best 22 shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (1-1, 1-1 Big South) plays host to Albert Lea at 7 p.m. tonight at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

New Ulm posted a 3-1 victory over Fairmont Area during junior varsity action Monday night.

Anna Utermarck generated the Cardinals’ only goal off an assist from Emma Scheppmann.

Kalie Hanna and Hannah Bergt combined to handle Fairmont Area’s goalkeeping duties.

Elayna Anderson produced a hat trick and two assists to help power Fairmont Area to a 5-2 triumph over New Ulm during C-squad action Monday in New Ulm.

Anderson opened the Cardinals’ offensive effort by converting Karissa Newville’s pass into a goal before Anderson set up Kennedy Baarts’ goal with an assist.

Anderson and Baarts then traded roles as Baarts delivered the setup pass on Anderson’s second goal.

Anderson completed her hat trick with another goal off an assist from Charli Clow before Anderson distributed a pass to Andrea Rojo for the Cardinals’ final score.

Goalkeeper Madi Stromberg recorded 10 saves to net the victory for Fairmont Area (1-0).
